Problem:

In the log files you see an error message like this:

“Failed to open VDDK disk [[datastore] vmname/vmname.vmdk] ( is read-only mode - [true] ) Failed to open VMDK. “Logon attempt with parameters [ESX: [xxx.xx.xxx.x];Port: 902;Login: [root];VMX Spec: [moref=xx];Snapshot mor: [xx-snapshot-xxx];Transports: [nbd]] failed because of the following errors: Server error: End of file"

Cause:

This error often appears when disks of a backed up machine are configured as Independent:

“Disk: label "Hard disk 1", path "[datastore] vmname/vmname.vmdk", capacity 5,00 GB, backing "CFlatVirtualDiskV2", mode "independent_persistent"

Solution:

Since independent disks are not affected by snapshots, they have to be excluded from the job. Please either exclude the disks or change their type to persistent (please note you will have to power off the VM to perform this operation).
