You are correct, you can perform actual VMotion, but subsequent snapshot operations on the VMotioned VM may start failing on destination host. This is exactly why people try to avoid having snapshots on VMs for which VMotion/DRS is used.

with the "changed block tracking", I understand you need v4 hosts, thats fine. But will that work on any VM version running on a v4 host?
IE vm version 4 vs new version 7 virtual machine versions? or doesnt this matter at all.

Kyle, yes - changed block tracking requires hardware version 7 virtual machines.

Yes, we changed the way we write backup data to backup file to better accomodate DataDomain data processing engine, so this should help a lot.
New transactional backup storage, providing for better reliability, performance and improved compatibility with third party hardware storage devices.

Does the new version support ESXi as a replication target?

Is it a new purchase to go to version 4.0?
With VEEAM, all upgrades are "free" for customers on maintenance (including major releases). All new license purchases include 1 year of maintenance. If you bought Veeam Backup earlier than 1 year ago, you need to check if you are (and have always been) on maintenance, and thus eligible for free upgrade.

What is the process for customers who are not on maintenance?

Do we purchase the full product again?

Get an upgrade?

Or pay a fee to get back on maintenance?

Thanks

Steven, such situations are typically handled on case-by-case basis, since we want to be flexible. Depending on when your first (free) year of maintenance has expired, you will need to pay for the months lapse in maintenance and a possible (slight) penalty.

Another question: Does every Veeam Backup 4.0 host needs its own SQL database. Or will there be a centralized solution for it?
Example: Aa total of 3 Veeam Backup 4.0 hosts: 1 of it with Veeam Backup 4.0 and SQL Server and 2 with Veeam Backup 4.0 only.

Yes to both

You can point multiple Veeam Backup 4.0 installations to the different instances of the same SQL server. So effectively you can have one central SQL server keeping all Veeam Backup data, just in various instances, for example: SQLSERVER\VEEAM1, SQLSERVER\VEEAM2, SQLSERVER\VEEAM3.

Thank you very much Gostev.

Is it possible to get a beta version of Veeam Backup 4.0 to test the functionality with Windows 2008R2 x64 and SQL Server 2008 x64 and vSphere?
