Progress database and VMware Quiescence

Post by collegeinstructor »

We have a Progress database on a virtual Linux server
We have had to manually stop the progress database when we have run the backup to avoid corrupting data.
Will the Veeam backup using VMware Quiescence enable me to run a backup of this server without corrupting the database?

Please include a brief explanation as to why or why not.

Hello Michael,

I would use built-in functionality of pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts execution while using VMware Tools Quiescence. Those scripts may automate your manual procedures of stopping and starting progress DB while VM snapshot is being taken. In this case you will have your DB backups in consistent state.

For more information about the scripts please refer to link below:

Hope it helps!

Couple of more relevant threads with examples:

You can also get a whitepaper from our support detailing how to perform transactionally consistent backups of MySQL running on Linux VM using VMware pre-freeze/post-thaw to created quiesced snapshots. It should be useful as a reference for how to set everything up.

[MERGED] Backup a VM which have a progress database installe

Post by Alxs »

Hello,

I try to find the safest way to backup a VM which have a progress database on it (Open Edge 11.5).

I know that the only supported way to backup a database by progress is to use their own system to do the backup :

http://knowledgebase.progress.com/artic ... cle/P11011
http://knowledgebase.progress.com/artic ... popup=true

So I know that veeam won't be able to do a consistent backup of the database. (It's not a problem since I do a databse dump every day with progress tools)
But do I have a risk to corrupt the database during a veeam backup with vss-aware option enable or not ?

Thanks in advance

No, there is no risk of corrupting the database by just creating/removing VM snapshots.

Ok thank you for your reply.

So for you I can safely do a veeam vss aware backup of this vm ?
Or is that better to disable the "vss-aware" option ?

Yes, if it's installed on top of Windows-based VM
