Can't connect to Linux Host

Postby jimo » Wed Mar 18, 2009 3:14 pm

I'm evaluating Veeam for our VM environment. After loading FastSCP and adding my ESX hosts, I'm trying to add a SLES 10 host but receive the error "Failed to login to IP address by ssh, port 22, user "root", elavate ToRoot false, autoSudo False, User authentication failed"
I've tried using root and another user but get a similar error.

I can log via ssh into the SLES host with putty and winscp. What am I missing??

Thanks in advanced

Hello, is that the only Linux host you have this problem with? Can you try some other Linux hosts (running other distros maybe)? Do logs from Help | Support information give any additional clues? Sound like there's an authentication problem. FastSCP only supports password authentication, so if you use some other authentication type in conjuction with it than this may result in a problem...

I've tried to connect to 2 other linux hosts, same result. I'm not a linux guru so bear with me but I'm not sure what you mean by password authentication. If a user account exists on the linux host, shouldn't the user be able to log in with the correct password.
How do I setup a strictly password authentication?

I looked at the logs but they weren't much help.

Thanks in advance

Hello, thanks for checking on other Linux hosts. Unfortunately I have not seen similar reports from other users lately (actually I am using FastSCP on couple of Linux boxes myself without any issues), so I don't know what else to recommend for you to check.

So please forward all logs to our support, hopefully we will be able to learn what's going on from the logs.

P.S. Just one more thought, does your root password contain some non-typical characters (spaces, british pound sign etc.)?

Yes, there special characters in the root password. If that makes a difference, I'll change it and give it a try.

If I'm not mistaken password authentication is disabled by default in SLES. PasswordAuthentication should be set to yes in the sshd_config file to enable it.
