Licensing
How is Veeam Backup & Replication licensed?
Veeam Backup & Replication is licensed per CPU socket on hosts with virtual machines (VMs) to be backed up and/or replicated. A license is required for each occupied motherboard socket as reported by the hypervisor API. Note: Target hosts (for replication and migration jobs) do not need to be licensed.
Are licensed sockets for each hypervisor tracked in the same pool?
No. Each hypervisor has its own socket count in the license file.
Is the socket price different, depending on the hypervisor?
No. The price is the same, regardless of the hypervisor.
Can I change my licensed sockets from one hypervisor to another?
Yes. You can change your licensed sockets from one hypervisor to another at any time by contacting your Veeam sales representative. To facilitate the conversion, you can get a free temporary license file with the total number of licensed sockets for both hypervisors. This will allow coexistence of environments on the same backup server. This license file is valid for three months and can be extended upon request (for large-socket-count environments only). Technical support for both hypervisors is included at no charge for the temporary license duration.
Are any product components (backup servers, backup proxies, backup repositories) licensed separately?
No. The product components are not licensed separately. You can deploy as many of these components as you like.
Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition is sold as a subscription. How does a subscription license work?
Customers who purchase a Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition subscription license the product for a defined period of time — similar to a magazine or other subscription. The license is not perpetual; at the end of the license period, both the use of the product as well as support will terminate. Customers can choose to renew their subscription license at the current rate or buy a new perpetual license.
How do I renew my licenses?
To renew your licenses, and get more information on the applicable discount, please go to My Account.
