What is Veeam Availability Suite 9.5?

Veeam® Availability Suite™ 9.5 is the flagship product providing Availability for All workloads — virtual, physical and cloud. It combines the backup, restore and replication capabilities of Veeam Backup & Replication™ with the advanced monitoring, reporting and capacity planning functionality of Veeam ONE™. Additionally, for small to medium-sized businesses, Veeam Backup Essentials™ offers the same functionality as Veeam Availability Suite, but in package and price points more appropriate for smaller businesses.

LEARN MORE ABOUT NEW 9.5 FEATURES!

What features are included in the various product editions?
Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, Veeam Agent for Linux and Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows include several features across their respective editions. Check out the Editions Comparison.
Can I get advanced monitoring, reporting and capacity planning for backup without purchasing Veeam Availability Suite?
Monitoring capabilities of Veeam ONE are included in both Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup Essentials. These monitoring features are available only in environments where version 6.5 or higher of both Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE are deployed. To take advantage of all the integrated features in 9.5, you must be running 9.5 of both products. Veeam ONE can also be sold as a standalone product for monitoring purposes.

Hypervisors

Is there a difference in price for using Veeam Availability Suite for VMware vSphere environments versus Microsoft Hyper-V environments?
No, Veeam maintains price parity across hypervisors, and our licensing is no longer hypervisor specific for vSphere and Hyper-V.
What if my virtual environment includes both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V?
Veeam licenses are no longer hypervisor-specific. To get started, simply purchase the correct number of perpetual sockets or subscription instances needed for your virtual environment. Any number or combination of your purchased licenses can be used for VMware vSphere and / or Microsoft Hyper-V environments.

Veeam Agents

What are Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux?

Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux — key components of the Veeam Availability Platform™ — are small backup agents designed to provide comprehensive backup and recovery for physical and cloud-based workloads running on servers, workstations, desktops, laptops and more. They are managed through a single console.

Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux (all versions) are sold and licensed with VUL and can be accessed with any of the VUL license packages: Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup Essentials. Agents can be managed centrally with Veeam Backup & Replication, they can be deployed as standalone products as well.

Can I back up to a Veeam repository when using the Free Editions of Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux?

Yes, with the Free Editions of Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux, you can back up to a Veeam repository backed by a licensed Veeam Backup & Replication server. However, you cannot have both free and paid editions of Veeam Agents backing up to a Veeam repository at the same time — you must choose to use either all free or all paid agents.

All versions of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows can be deployed in server mode to enable server-specific features (e.g., application-aware processing, file indexing and search, server-friendly scheduling and retention, etc.), making it the best choice for server backups for many enterprise applications.

USER GUIDE: Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 3.0

USER GUIDE: Veeam Agent for Linux 3.0

Veeam Agents are edition-agnostic but have some unique capabilities for server and workstation. Check out the Editions Comparison that shows what is available for the protection of servers and workstations.
Is there a minimum purchase requirement for Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux licenses?

New VUL licenses can be used for standalone Veeam Agent-only deployments and when agents are managed by the Veeam Backup & Replication server. Licenses must be purchased in quantities of at least 10 license instances.

This is detailed in our licensing policy.

Does the move to Veeam Universal License increase the price for Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux?
No, it costs less now! While the move may suggest that Agents cost more, the reality is that agents have always been edition-agnostic. Recent cost decreases now make protecting Agents a greater bargain, so it costs less to protect each Server or Workstation workload.
I only need one or two agent licenses. Why am I required to purchase 10?

Veeam has changed how we sell Subscription licenses and have moved to selling a pool of portable licenses instead of only selling single product-specific licenses. The minimum increment of VUL orders is 10 license instances. Fortunately, these VUL licenses can be used across multiple products, including Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, Enterprise Applications for SAP HANA and Oracle, Nutanix AHV, File Shares(coming soon) and more.

If you only need to protect agents, the most cost-effective option would be to purchase VUL Standard edition. At three instances per server, one bundle of 10 instances would protect three servers, leaving one instance for whatever you choose.

If you have other Veeam products in your environment and you want to centrally manage the environment, we ask that you maintain the same edition across the various products.

What are Veeam Agents for IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris?

Veeam Agents for IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris are backup agents designed to ensure the availability of your IBM AIX and Oracle workloads by providing backup and recovery for physical servers and servers running as LPARs / Zones. They are standalone products, licensed with a separate (Non-VUL) license, and are not part of Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Availability Suite.

Server licenses for Veeam Agents for IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris include 24.7.365 Technical Support for the term of the purchased license — from one (1) year to five (5) years.

The first version is a standalone product and does not integrate with other Veeam products including Veeam Backup & Replication, nor is it able to send backups to a Veeam backup repository. Updates are expected to integrate these Unix products with other Veeam products and licenses shortly.

Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV

What is Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV?

In addition to delivering backup and recovery for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors for Nutanix Enterprise Cloud environments, Veeam now supports backup and recovery for all applications and data hosted on Nutanix AHV with Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV (VAN).

VAN provides:

  • Simple and streamlined data management through a powerful and intuitive prism-like interface.
  • Availability for all applications, VMs and data, which minimizes the risk of data loss for your business.
  • Granular data recovery for Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint and Oracle, which provides agentless, granular and rapid recovery of individual objects, files and application items with a simple, intuitive interface.
  • Operational simplicity to eliminate the costs and complexity of legacy infrastructures and provides Intelligent Data Management for Nutanix Enterprise Cloud environments.
How is VAN licensed today?
VAN is licensed using Veeam’s portable subscription model with Veeam Universal License (VUL).
Can Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV be used as a standalone product, or does it require other Veeam products?
Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV proxy is purchased as a standalone product, however, it requires a Veeam backup server and Veeam backup repository as a target for backups of AHV VMs. Once the VAN proxy gets downloaded, it will trigger Veeam order processing to send you the VUL licenses required to download the VBR edition you purchased at no additional cost.
Can I migrate to VAN from any other Veeam product?
Yes, existing Veeam customers will be able to move from one Veeam product to VAN simply by applying assigned VUL licenses to the VAN product. This applies to Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup Essentials VUL SKUs.

Community Edition

What is Community Edition?

Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition offers an excellent introduction to the features and functionality of Veeam Backup & Replication. There is also a Veeam ONE Community Edition. Community Edition delivers the same functionality as Veeam Backup & Replication Standard Edition at no cost for up to 10 instances. Veeam ONE Community Edition delivers similar functionality as Veeam ONE and is available for free for up to 10 instances.

Compare the features of Community Edition.

Is Community Edition for Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE replacing the respective Free Edition offerings?
Yes, starting with Update 4. If a customer is currently using Veeam Backup Free Edition or Veeam ONE Free Edition, nothing will change with their account. They have downloaded the product and the code remains on their machine. However, when they decide to upgrade to Update 4, or a newer version, to take advantage of Veeam’s latest features, their account will convert to Community Edition.

VCSP partners

Where can Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) partners learn more?
The FAQs shown here are applicable to end customers. For more information specific to VCSP deployments, please contact your Veeam representative.
General Veeam licensing information, including licensing criteria and terminology, can be viewed here and the Veeam licensing policy is here.
How is Veeam Availability Suite and its related products licensed?

Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE and Veeam Backup Essentials can each be licensed in two ways:

  1. Through use of a portable VUL Universal license, which includes 24x7 Production Support
  2. Using a Per-socket license with Basic or Production maintenance

Certain features may be offered only with Universal licensing due to the nature of the environment or workload.

VUL “Universal” licenses are portable Subscription licenses sold in bundles, and these license instances can be used across many products or workloads interchangeably. There are one- to five-year Instance licensing terms available, and customers can choose to purchase license bundles upfront or pay annually. Learn more about the portable VUL licenses.

Per-Socket licenses are licensed per CPU socket on hosts with virtual machines (VMs) (VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V only) to be backed up, replicated, monitored or reported on. A license is required for each occupied motherboard socket as reported by the hypervisor API.

To purchase, please contact your preferred reseller, find a Veeam reseller in your area or place an inquiry with Veeam sales.

How are Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux licensed?

Both of these products are licensed with the VUL universal license, with any VUL SKU. There is no longer a license SKU just for Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux.

Effective at contract renewal or at the upgrade to v3, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux will use Veeam Universal License (VUL). Learn more about VUL here.

What do I need to do when upgrading from a previous version to Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam Backup Essentials / Veeam ONE 9.5 Update 4?
Existing subscription customers prior to Feb. 1, 2019 will be required to update their license file within 90 days of an in-place upgrade of Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam ONE 9.5 Update 4. The new VUL (Veeam Universal License) model goes into effect at the install of Update 4 or the renewal of the subscription term.
Is it possible to stay with my current license version (prior to 9.5 Update 4)?
Yes, you can stay with your current license version if you don’t want to upgrade and take advantage of the enhancements available only with Update 4. Customers needing some features like Agents for Windows or Linux, backup up enterprise apps like SAP HANA or Oracle RMAN or protecting cloud workloads are required to use VUL licenses. Please note that after renewal, you will get a VUL file compatible only with Update 4. If you still don’t want to install Update 4, you can request a legacy license file by opening a licensing ticket at my.veeam.com.
If I don’t upgrade to Update 4, will my legacy license file of Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam Backup Essentials subscription per-VM continue working?

Your legacy license file will be working as-is for your current support term. However, this licensing option is no longer available, and you need to consider the following renewal options:

  1. Renew your support term for Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam ONE with the new model and benefit from centralized management across all protected workloads.
  2. If you require central management across multiple Veeam products, updating your license file now is advised. All products need to be current on Veeam maintenance.

More information on merging products is available here, and you can calculate how many instances you need here. Please contact the Veeam Renewals Team if you want to discuss your options early.

I have a Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam Backup Essentials Perpetual license per-socket that has some built-in free instances. Can I use them to back up physical servers and workstations?
The gifted instances provided to existing Per-Socket customers (one instance per each CPU socket up to a maximum of six instances) to try protecting Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux, Enterprise Application Plug-ins for SAP HANA and Oracle RMAN and more. There are no obligations, and these included instances for free. However, these trial license will expire when you purchase additional VUL licenses in this same environment.
I have a Veeam Availability Suite / Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam Backup Essentials Per-Socket perpetual license and I need centralized management with Veeam Agents. Is it possible to get a merged license file for my infrastructure?
Yes. For your current support term, you can generate a merged license file at my.veeam.com. Instructions on merging license files can be found here.
Can I have both VUL Per-Workload (subscription) and Per-Socket (perpetual) licenses?

Customers can have an environment mixed with both perpetual and subscription licenses that is centrally managed. The products must be the same across all licenses (for Perpetual licensing the editions must also match). If you protect VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V VMs with perpetual per-socket licenses you must protect all vSphere/Hyper-V VMs with sockets in that environment, VUL licenses can be used for any other non-VM workload type.

Important Note: when merging Per-Socket and VUL licenses, be aware that the socket license dictates the edition and capability of the merged environment. For example: If you merge VAS ENT sockets with VAS VUL (ENT+), the environment is still ENT feature set. IN order to get ENT+ capabilities, users need to either a) Migrate Per-Socket licenses to VUL licenses or b) upgrade Per-Socket licenses to the preferred edition (likely ENT+).

How do I merge license files?
If a customer wants to have a centrally managed environment, they may need to merge license files. The requirement is that maintenance be current for BOTH the per-socket AND the VUL components. Reference this KB article for more details on merging licenses. Contact Veeam Support for assistance with any issues.
What happens if after Update 4 my total license count across Veeam Backup Essentials (subscription per-VM) and Veeam Agent licenses exceeds 50 licenses?

If the product installation manages an environment of more than 50 instances, at the renewal of your subscription term, you can choose from the following options based on your business needs:

  • If centralized management is required, we advise you to renew your subscription term with a FREE upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite. This is a one-time offer to renew for one to five years at the price of Veeam Backup Essentials. After that, the subsequent renewal will be quoted for the then-current full price of Veeam Availability Suite.
  • If no centralized management is required, you can split and renew your subscription into several licenses for Veeam Backup Essentials — up to 50 instances each.

For your current subscription term, you can generate a new license file at no additional cost for the workloads you have. Attention! The centralized management option for more than 50 instances will only be available until your next renewal.

As a heavily discounted SMB offering, all new and renewed Veeam Backup Essentials (VBE) licenses will have some merge restrictions, but VBE socket licenses can be merged with VAS VUL licenses. If customer hits their maximum license limit, they are encouraged up upgrade to VAS or VBR.

Please contact the Veeam Renewals Team if you want to discuss your options early.

Are any product components, such as backup servers, backup proxies or backup repositories, licensed separately?
No, product components are not licensed separately. You can deploy as many of these components as you like while licensed to the correct number of sockets or VMs.
I use Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Backup Essentials or Veeam Backup Starter and would like to upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite. How can I do this?

Customers with Per-socket licenses of Veeam Backup & Replication (or other product) who are current on maintenance and customers with Subscription licenses can upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite at a price that takes their original investment into consideration. Contact your Veeam sales representative to request the upgrade.

For Per-socket license holders, as part of the upgrade, you will receive one year of Basic support. Maintenance for your Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE licenses should be co-termed to facilitate a single-support expiration date for all components of your Veeam Availability Suite. For those interested in upgrading a Subscription / VUL license, support is already included.

To take advantage of all the integrated features in 9.5, you must be running 9.5 for both products.

I currently use Veeam ONE only and would like to upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite. How do I do this?
Customers with Perpetual licenses of Veeam ONE who are current on maintenance can upgrade to Veeam Availability Suite at a price that takes their original investment in Veeam ONE into consideration. Customers with Instance licenses can use their existing instances for other products, including Veeam Availability Suite, and can purchase additional instances as needed.
For Veeam Backup Essentials or other product with maximum environment sizes, what do I do when my virtual environment grows beyond the maximum size?
Contact a Veeam sales or renewals representative to discuss appropriate upgrade options.
What happens to my Veeam ONE license if I upgrade from Veeam Backup Essentials to Veeam Backup & Replication?
If you upgrade from Veeam Backup Essentials to Veeam Backup & Replication, your Veeam ONE license is invalidated, and you are no longer eligible for support or maintenance for Veeam ONE. You are required to sign and submit a Letter of Destruction for Veeam ONE, and you should discontinue use of it.
My organization currently owns Veeam Backup Essentials. Can I buy licenses of Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication?
Yes, however, to get a merged key (which would include Veeam Backup Essentials licenses), customers should either upgrade all licenses to Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication. See the licensing policy.
