Cloud Restore for ANY Veeam Backup coming in Veeam Availability Suite 9.5

The second feature announcement of NEW Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 brings the full integration of the previously released stand-alone feature, Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure. This new, fully integrated feature provides businesses with the ability to optimize resource allocation to drive scalability and minimize cost — to efficiently extend Availability to the hybrid cloud.

What does it do?

This solution enables businesses to take their on-premises workloads and restore or migrate them to Azure using an automated P2V or V2V conversion process. With Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure, IT administrators can:

  • Quickly restore Windows- and Linux-based virtual machines (VMs), physical servers or endpoints to Azure to minimize business disruption
  • Execute planned workload migrations from on-site to the cloud to reduce on-site resource constraints
  • Easily create an Azure-based test environment for testing backup reliability, as well as patches and critical updates to mitigate risks associated with application deployment

This feature is designed for customers to restore Veeam backups created by the following products to Azure (IaaS):

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
  • Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE
  • Veeam Backup Free Edition

What’s the difference between the earlier version and this version?

We have received a lot of feedback on the technology preview of this functionality that was released a few months ago! Most users did not like that they had to utilize multiple Veeam products and user interfaces (UIs) to complete a restore to Azure. With Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure in Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5, a user will be able to restore or migrate ANYTHING (Windows- and Linux-based VMs, physical servers or endpoints) to Microsoft Azure directly from within the Veeam Backup & Replication server on-premises.

Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure

The following table provides details on additional enhancements that will be available when this feature is integrated in Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5:

Initial technology preview
(released March 2016)
9.5 fully-integrated feature
Must pre-deploy a restore appliance from the Azure Marketplace No need to deploy an appliance, restore directly from your data center
Must use separate UIs and a two-step process to copy backup to Azure, then restore Restore into Azure directly from the Veeam Backup & Replication UI
No support for Linux OS restore Both Windows and Linux backups are supported for restore
No Azure Virtual Machine Agent on restored VM Azure Virtual Machine Agent is installed automatically (on Windows-based VM only)
No support for Azure Resource Manager Both Classic and Resource Manager deployment models are supported
Sequential disk restore only Parallel disk and VM restore

Note that even after Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 is released, you will not have to deploy it on-premises. Instead, Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure functionality can be used by deploying a FREE Azure appliance from the Azure Marketplace, and copying backups you want to restore to that appliance.

It is also critical to note that those of you who are already using Veeam Cloud Connect Backup for Service Providers or Veeam Cloud Connect for the Enterprise appliances in Azure can bypass the step of copying backup files (since their backups are already stored in Azure), and restore directly from their existing Azure appliance as soon as it is upgraded to version 9.5.
