Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to reformat your entire data estate just to migrate from, say, VMware ESXi to Nutanix AHV. For example, you may have years of data backed up by Veeam while your applications run on VMware ESXi infrastructure in support of your regulatory/compliance solution. There’s just no getting out of it.
However, most of those backups will never be rehydrated into a production environment. In fact, anecdotally, many IT admins report that most restore operations use backups less than a week old, with only a small share coming from those older than one month. As a result, many backups simply age out under your retention policy — or, depending on industry requirements, are stored indefinitely — which consumes storage and drives up costs.
Simplify ESXi to Nutanix AHV Migration Without Rehydration Overhead
Until recently, keeping your VMware ESXi backups in place while migrating to Nutanix AHV meant maintaining a VMware license for a staging pod on standby just in case a need arises where an old backup must be rehydrated. This extra gear and licensing would need to be deployed and maintained for as long as your backups remain within the scope of your compliance obligations.
That’s a whole lot of expenditure for a solution that may rarely be used.
Veeam and Nutanix are launching a new joint-solution to make your transition to Nutanix AHV as seamless and cost-effective as possible.
Moving forward, you will have the choice to keep your pre-existing backups in the state in which they were created (e.g., VMware backups cataloged as a part of Veeam archival storage) and ditch the extra licensing, hardware, and IT expenses.
If you have access to your long-term backups, that’s all that matters. You shouldn’t have to pay a “just in case” licensing penalty to remain compliant.
Key benefits:
- Supports your compliance requirement without having to transform all your backups ahead of time.
- Provides an automated “easy button” dynamic rehydration process.
- Doesn’t require a just-in-case VMware license in perpetuity.
- Allows you to focus on the primary task of migrating your production environment to Nutanix AHV.
You have a money-saving opportunity because:
- AHV ships at no extra cost as part of your Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) license.
- Your cost of migration drops (versus having to either move your entire estate or maintain a just-in-case VMware license).
- With a Veeam Universal License (VUL), you can move your license from one workload without an additional cost.
This is a big win for you. Veeam and Nutanix are collaborating on solutions designed to reduce infrastructure and operational costs. What’s not to love?
