Challenge

How to upgrade to version 5 if you are running Veeam Backup 3.x or 4.x.

Solution

If you are running Veeam Backup version 4.x, please make sure you have an updated license file before you upgrade.

To perform an upgrade of Veeam Backup & Replication server to version 5.0.2, you must be running version 4.x, 5.0 or 5.0.1 before following the steps below:

1. Ensure that the latest run for all existing jobs completed successfully. If some jobs have failed, re-run the failed jobs. Otherwise, job upgrade procedure may fail.
2. Download the required x86 or x64 package of the latest version of Veeam Backup & Replication 5.0.2 from:

x86 version:
http://download2.veeam.com/veeam_backup_5.0.2.230.zip

x64 version:
http://download2.veeam.com/veeam_backup_5.0.2.230_x64.zip

3. Extract the downloaded archive and run the Veeam_Backup_Setup.exe setup file
4. Setup will detect the existing installation and will ask you to confirm the upgrade
5. Click Yes and follow the upgrade wizard steps. Be sure to select the same SQL database and instance that was used by the previous Veeam Backup version.

If you are planning to upgrade to the latest version from version 3.x, you will need to upgrade to version 4.1.2 first. Please contact support to obtain a download link for Veeam Backup version 4, and contact our sales team to obtain a version 4 license file.

After upgrading to version 4, please run all your jobs and make sure they complete successfully. You can now upgrade to version 5.
