Challenge

When the agent transport mode is used to connect to the host, the job fails with the error:

“Initializing target session, Error in elevating to superuser”

The following errors can be seen in the job log:

[timestamp] Error    Error sudo disabling sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0600, should be 0440\n   at Veeam.Backup.SSH.SudoEnabler.Dispose()
[timestamp] Error    Error in elevating to superuser

Cause

The /etc/sudoers file does not permit access, so the psuedo command can not be performed.

Solution

In this case, you need to log in to the ESX in question using root credentials and run the following command:

chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers

The command will change the file system mode for the /etc/sudoers file and provide read permissions to the owner of the file as well as the user members of the file's group.
