Challenge

Two different issues are possible:

Scenario 1: Cannot Remove Protection Domain

When trying to remove a protection domain containing the virtual machines, which are being backed up by Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV backup appliance, the following error occurs:

Specified protection domain has third-party backup snapshot(s)

Scenario 2: System Warning About Third-Party Snapshots

The following warning begins to occur in the cluster for a few protection domains or virtual machines:

Aged third-party backup snapshots present

Cause

Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV backup proxy appliance creates and keeps snapshots for each virtual machine in the backup job for change block tracking purposes. It is not possible to remove a protection domain containing such snapshots. The default warning threshold for the third-party snapshots is equal to seven days. Therefore, you may start receiving warnings if any of the third-party snapshots are older than that threshold.

Solution

Scenario 1: Cannot Remove Protection Domain

To resolve this issue, the snapshots must be deleted first, which will automatically occur when either the entire backup policy is removed or a virtual machine stops being processed by a backup policy.

Remove a VM from being protected by a backup policy:

  1. Go to the backup job settings in the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV web interface.
  2. Remove the virtual machines protected by the domain.

These actions will delete the third-party snapshots created by the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV backup proxy appliance for those machines and will allow you to remove the protection domain.

Scenario 2: System Warning About Third-Party Snapshots

Note: This warning can be safely ignored.

To eliminate the occurences of the warning, either:

  • Increase the warning threshold in the cluster.

    or
  • Change the schedule of the backup job to have it running within the configured threshold.
