Object Storage Offloading

Third-Party Object Storage Offloading Software

These third-party applications are designed to help upload files to cloud storage.

What is Supported

Third-party object storage gateway software is only supported if all backup data written to the repository by Veeam Backup & Replication remains on the repository, and that third-party software will only upload copies of the backup data to the object storage.

What is Not Supported

Third-party object storage gateway software that modified the on-prem files after it has uploaded them to object storage is not supported. For example, the third-party software Tiger Bridge has a setting for "space reclaiming," which replaces the on-prem files it has uploaded to the cloud with "nearline files," which are essentially stub files containing no content. If Veeam Backup & Replication attempts to interact with these stub files, it will interpret the lack of file content as being due to file corruption.

For additional information, please refer to the User Guide.

Put simply, any software or storage appliance that manipulates the backup file's content is unsupported. Any modifications to the backup file's content will cause issues within Veeam Backup & Replication, as it expects that the backup files will remain on disk in the state as when they were written.

Recommended Object Storage Offloading Method

Veeam recommends using the native Scale-Out Backup Repository Capacity Tier feature for offloading backup files to object storage, which operates in a significantly different manner:

  1. It preserves certain essential parts of offloaded backup files' data in the primary backup repository.
  2. It passes the awareness of offloaded data blocks to various product functions, which then specially treat such data blocks to ensure reliable operations, acceptable levels of performance, and reduced storage/ingress/egress costs.
