The business challenge
BIOCAD aims to help people to enjoy longer and healthier lives by providing
safe, and effective treatments for cancer, autoimmune and rare diseases. At
its research and manufacturing sites, the company focuses on developing,
testing and launching a pipeline of innovative products.
“Our IT systems play a crucial role in our success, from accelerating
research and development to managing our global supply chain,” said
Pavel Palnikov, Director of Infrastructure Solutions Department at BIOCAD.
“Our lab teams and business users rely on fast, uninterrupted access to
critical files and reports.”
In recent years, BIOCAD adopted a hybrid IT model, running cloud-based
Microsoft services, including Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Exchange,
to support enterprise-wide collaboration. The company also decided to
migrate its main file storage environment from an on-premises deployment
to SharePoint Online.
“Our Microsoft solutions are normally reliable, but we always face the
risk of data loss, making robust data-protection measures essential,” said
Pavel Palnikov. As a global biotechnology company, we must also comply
with stringent industry regulations that require us to safeguard the
integrity of our data assets.”
However, BIOCAD recognized that its existing backup solution had
significant drawbacks. The complexity of the solutions meant regular
maintenance tasks consumed large amounts of time and resources. They
also lacked key capabilities, prompting the company to purchase additional
tools to protect all key systems.
“As we moved our business-critical data onto SharePoint Online, we
decided to refresh our data protection strategy,” said Pavel Palnikov. “We
wanted to streamline our approach, using one best-in-class solution that
would provide comprehensive protection, help us to manage risk, and
reduce the burden on our team.”
The Veeam solution
To achieve its strategic goals, BIOCAD deployed Veeam Backup for Microsoft
Office 365 to protect around 10TB of email data. The company then added
Veeam Backup & Replication to safeguard its entire infrastructure.
Yury Podnebesnikov, Deputy Head of System Administration Division at BIOCAD
said: “Veeam offers high-quality solutions that meet our budgetary objectives.
Also, we were happy with the engagement with the Veeam team. They allowed
us to test their backup solutions on our complex environment before we
committed to the deal and provided effective support throughout the process.”
Working with Veeam documentation, BIOCAD deployed Veeam Backup
& Replication in just half a day. The company now uses the solutions to
complete daily incremental backups of its cloud and local data, including
files from its lab PCs. BIOCAD also runs occasional complex backups,
replicating hundreds of terabytes of data overall.
“Configuring the backup of millions of files was challenging, but with
good detailed Veeam manuals, the process ran seamlessly,” said Yury
Podnebesnikov. “Since we in BIOCAD had long-term plans to upgrade our
backup solution, we, with the support of Veeam experts, were able to deploy
a more refined configuration and select the proper storage architecture. And
thanks to Veaam’s free coaching courses, we trained the entire administration
team in a short time, which greatly facilitated the use of software.”
In case of data loss or more serious systems failures, Veeam Backup & Replication
enables BIOCAD to restore files quickly and easily. Similarly, the intuitive user
interface simplifies management and maintenance tasks, enabling IT team
members to schedule and monitor backup processes with just a few clicks.
“The Veeam solution gives us robust protection against data loss without
having to purchase extra tools, enabling us to operate more costefficiently,”
said Yury Podnebesnikov. “With Veeam Backup & Replication,
we are safeguarding our business continuity, ensuring our research and
development teams can work without interruption on creating nextgeneration
therapies that improve peoples’ lives.”
“Looking ahead, we are excited about the enhanced functionality that
Veeam is developing,” said Pavel Palnikov. “We are also interested in other
steps in the Veeam roadmap, such as data protection for Kubernetes
“Moreover, now we are about to implement Veeam ONE® monitoring tools
in our infrastructure,” commented Yury Podnebesnikov.
- Mitigates the risk of data loss by backing up data for 2,700 employees
daily, keeping research and manufacturing operations running smoothly:
Working with Veeam enhances BIOCAD’s data protection strategy, helping
to maintain the availability of critical data for research and business teams.
- Reduced working time for BIOCAD’s IT team, freeing them to perform
more valuable tasks:
Rather than spending lengthy periods maintaining the old backup solutions,
BIOCAD’s IT team now have more time to focus on productive work.
- Helped BIOCAD comply with stringent healthcare data protection
requirements in multiple countries:
With the Veeam solution, BIOCAD gains sophisticated data management
capabilities, including full traceability of clinical trial data, ensuring
it passes audits by official healthcare agencies and pharmaceutical
companies in Russia, Brazil and Europe.
