Data Agility Group

Data Agility Group helps Fortune 1000 companies, government offices and educational institutions reduce the cost and complexity of their storage architectures. The company works directly with service providers and storage vendors to deliver on-premise and outsourcing services for data migration and disaster recovery configurations.

Data Agility Group (DAG) specializes in large-scale, mixed-environment data migration. A typical DAG client needs to move massive amounts of data between similar or dissimilar storage systems in an existing datacenter or to a new datacenter.

When data migration involves virtualized environments, the biggest challenge is to replicate virtual machines (VMs) with minimal impact on production. To overcome this challenge, DAG added Veeam® Backup & Replication™ to its solution set. Not only does Veeam enable DAG to offer efficient VM replication for large-scale data migrations involving mixed environments, it also helps DAG differentiate itself from competitors by offering this service at a lower cost. In addition, Veeam helps the company increase its client base and margins of profitability.

Veeam Backup & Replication Provides New Revenue Stream

Veeam Backup & Replication provides fast, flexible and reliable recovery of virtualized applications and data for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. DAG uses Veeam to replicate clients’ VMs during datacenter migrations. Because Veeam is storage-agnostic, it doesn’t matter if data is being moved between similar or dissimilar storage systems.

“Before Veeam, it was a challenge to move large-scale virtualized environments,” said Andy Abbas, Vice President, Technical Services for DAG. “The tools we used were not flexible in allowing us to selectively move VMs or portions of the environment as required by the customer’s planning and timeline. With Veeam Backup & Replication, we are able to selectively move groups of VMs. Veeam has also given us increased granularity. It provides the flexibility and efficiency needed for large virtualized environments.”

Abbas said Veeam has minimal impact on client production environments. By leveraging the latest technological advancements in VMware vSphere and vStorage, such as changed block tracking and thin-provisioned disks, Veeam delivers unprecedented replication speed. It also provides near-continuous data protection (near-CDP) by capturing changes and updating VM images as often as every few minutes.

“Veeam does such a great job with changed block tracking that it saved us roughly 200 hours with one client,” Abbas said. “The client had mostly Linux VMs. With native tools, we were able to capture an initial copy onto the target environment. In order to keep the new environment in sync with the production environment until cutover, an alternate method that captured only the changes had to be employed. Before Veeam, this was often cumbersome and not reliable because manual intervention was involved. Using changed block tracking, Veeam kept the source VMs in sync with the new target VMs. When you replicate VMs using limited bandwidth, efficiently capturing changes at the source and replicating to the new target frequently and efficiently are extremely critical. With Veeam, we were able to complete this customer’s migration in record time.”

Abbas said knowing that Veeam can replicate hundreds of VMs quickly and easily has enabled the company to approach clients it couldn’t approach before Veeam was part of its repertoire.

“Veeam helps increase our client base and margins of profitability because it enables us to perform extremely large VM replications quite efficiently,” he explained. “The number of client referrals has increased as well. Our clients are impressed with our methodologies, especially how we utilize Veeam replication to capture and migrate their VM environments with little to no intrusion to production.

“Veeam differentiates us from our competition too,” Abbas continued. “We can perform large-scale VM migrations at a lower cost than our competitors because Veeam is cost-effective to license and operate.”

Veeam Backup & Replication is licensed per CPU socket and includes backup, replication, deduplication, multi-hypervisor support and centralized management in one cohesive solution. There are no per-application, per-VM or per-host fees. Veeam ProPartners can purchase Veeam licenses or rent them on a monthly basis.

Stoney Gwitira, Vice President, Information Technology for DAG, said adding Veeam Backup & Replication to the company’s solution set was an excellent decision.

“Aside from offering large-scale VM migrations at a lower cost than our competitors, Veeam also gives us peace of mind,” Gwitira said. “DAG is trusted by some of the largest institutions in the world because we safeguard their data. Veeam helps us safeguard VMs through fast, efficient replication.”
