Energy and Telecommunications Cooperative Simplifies Backup and Recovery with Veeam


Tecteo Group is an intermunicipal cooperative that offers energy and telecommunications services in Belgium. With a head office in Liège, Tecteo Group conducts business at 19 additional sites and employs 2,000 people.


The legacy backup tool was slow and unreliable. The VMs running Microsoft Exchange took 10 hours to back up and were difficult to recover.

The Business Challenge

Tecteo Group was established following the merger of several diverse public and private-sector companies. After the consolidation of IT, there was an urgent need to guarantee data recovery in the event of a disaster.

Tecteo Group focused on finding a fast and reliable backup and recovery solution for its 800 VMware vSphere virtual machines (VMs) spread across two datacentres. At first the IT department tried to back up the VMs to tape with its legacy backup tool; however, this led to several challenges. First, backup was slow and unreliable. Backing up the VMs running Microsoft Exchange took 10 hours, and if the backup didn’t fail, it spilled into the next workday, which affected employees. Recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTOs and RPOs) were not being met either.

On average, employees waited approximately four hours for a file to be restored. Furthermore, recovering individual items from Microsoft Exchange was difficult.

The legacy backup tool was also expensive. It was priced per volume to be backed up, and the Exchange VMs alone held 9 terabytes. The legacy backup tool also required agents. Purchasing, deploying and maintaining agents in each VM was not only costly, it was also time-consuming. In addition, the legacy backup tool was inflexible because it required specific backup storage.

“We needed a fast, reliable, easy-to-use and cost-effective backup and recovery solution for our virtual environment,” said Laurent Timmermans, System Engineer for Tecteo Group. “We had to be able to back up and restore quickly and easily, especially the VMs running Microsoft Exchange because that application is key for us.”

The Veeam Solution

Bull agreed that Veeam Backup & Replication was the best choice and installed the solution for Tecteo Group. Veeam provides powerful, easy-to-use and affordable backup and recovery of virtualised applications and data for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.

“Veeam met all the requested requirements,” said Benoît Desloges, Technical Consultant for Bull. “Veeam is agentless, storage-agnostic, easy-to-deploy and use, and it provides fast backup and recovery. Our customers tell us they like Veeam because it is intuitive.”

With Veeam, backup, recovery and reliability have improved significantly for Tecteo Group. Before Veeam, an employee’s restore request was escalated to a backup engineer, and recovering a file or individual item took four hours. With Veeam, restore requests are no longer escalated. The first line support team can recover a file or individual item in minutes with Veeam’s 1-Click Restore.

The IT department also uses Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft Exchange to restore emails, notes and contacts in minutes, and it plans to use Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft SharePoint for granular recovery as well. Timmermans said employees are much happier now that their lost files can be restored quickly. “All of the previous recovery problems caused by the legacy backup tool disappeared once we began using Veeam,” he said. “Recovery is easy with Veeam, as it should be.”

Tecteo Group also uses Veeam to replicate the VMs running SAP Application Servers between datacentres for disaster recovery (DR). If those VMs go down, the IT department has a copy of the VMs in a ready-to-start state for business continuity.

Timmermans noted that Veeam Backup & Replication was significantly more cost-effective than the legacy backup tool. “Veeam was 80% less expensive than our legacy backup,” he explained. “I would recommend Veeam to every company with a virtual environment. It’s economical, easy-to-use and helpful. Veeam removes the complexity of traditional backup.”

The Results

Backup and recovery speeds increase significantly
Before Tecteo Group deployed Veeam Backup & Replication, backing up and recovering the Microsoft Exchange VMs was difficult and time-consuming. With Veeam, backing up those same VMs is 60% faster, and recovering Exchange items takes minutes.

RPOs and RTOs are easy to meet with built-in features
