Awin connects brands with their next customer. Connections are powered by an enormous online network of advertisers and publishers.
More than 6,000 advertisers connect with 100,000 publishers to reach millions of consumers through affiliate marketing. Publishers of web sites such as Ebates, RetailMeNot, and Time Inc. partner with advertisers such as Etsy, Hard Rock Hotels, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Swarovski to promote their products and services while earning commission for every transaction they influence.
Here’s how it works: A consumer visits a publisher’s web site, clicks a link to an advertiser’s site and purchases a product. The advertiser pays the publisher commission for the sale. In 2016, advertisers made $6.7 billion in revenue. Publishers earned $406 million.
“We track every click and every transaction, which makes data the heart of our business,” said Benedict Hartmann, System Linux Engineer for Awin. “If our data isn’t available 24.7.365, we could lose thousands of dollars every second.”
To ensure data is available 24.7.365, Awin deployed Veeam® Backup & Replication™ in 2010. Backup and recovery were fast. Meeting recovery time and points objectives (RTPO™) was easy. Then Awin’s data began to grow exponentially.
By 2016 data was growing upward of 50TB each year, and Awin’s backup storage couldn’t keep pace. Backup slowed down significantly, which extended the backup window to 24 hours. Recovery slowed down as well. RTPO was in danger.
“When data grows that fast, protecting it and making it available 24.7.365 becomes a major business challenge,” Hartmann said. “Purchasing additional legacy storage wasn’t the solution because it was cost-prohibitive.”
Rather than risk downtime and data loss, Awin replaced the backup repository with high-performing Nimble Storage from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). The benefits were immediate.
Veeam and Nimble Storage are so tightly integrated that 24.7.365 Availability of data was instantaneous. The backup window shrank by 99 percent, recovery time decreased by 50 percent, RTPO narrowed to 15 minutes and Awin saved $200,000 in backup storage costs.
“The integration between Veeam and Nimble has been the highlight of our backup journey,” Hartmann said. “By delivering our data 24.7.365, Veeam and Nimble reduced our risk of downtime and data loss. They support our business so we can support our advertisers and publishers.”
The integration between Veeam and Nimble is based on backup and recovery from storage snapshots rather than backup and recovery from VMware vSphere snapshots. The latter put a burden on Awin’s production environment.
Backup from Nimble storage snapshots puts no burden on Awin’s production environment. As a result, the primary backup window decreased from 24 hours to fifteen minutes (99 percent), which means that Awin can back up more frequently (as often as every 15 minutes).
Restoring backups from Nimble storage snapshots is 50 percent faster. Prior to Veeam-Nimble integration, recovery took 30 minutes. Now recovery takes no more than 15 minutes. That’s how Awin reduced RTPO to 15 minutes.
“Veeam and Nimble are better together,” Hartmann said. “There’s no better choice for enterprise backup and storage.”
