IT is integral to every course of action at InnerVision Advanced Medical Imaging because it supports all information systems, imaging systems and staff.
Before InnerVision implemented a VMware environment containing four ESX hosts and 30 virtual machines (VMs), the IT team researched several backup solutions. “Our requirements were simple and clear-cut,” said Lance Madsen, Radiology Information Systems Administrator for InnerVision. “Like many organizations, we wanted a VMware backup solution that was easy to use, fast, reliable and costeffective. As a health care organization, we needed a backup solution that would help us meet HIPAA guidelines.”
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires health care organizations like InnerVision to establish and implement an automated off-site data backup solution with on-demand recovery. “We researched two image-based VMware backup tools,” Lance explained. “But ultimately, it came down to performance. Not only is Veeam Backup & Replication faster and better with regard to recovery, it is also more cost-effective.”
InnerVision uses Veeam Backup & Replication to back up all patient data to an off-site data center. While fast and reliable backups are important to Lance and his colleagues, Veeam’s SureBackup Recovery Verification capability gives them complete peace of mind.
“SureBackup helps us ensure we meet HIPAA requirements,” Lance said. “Now we know we can verify the recoverability of every backup, of every virtual machine, every single time. When we first began using SureBackup, we quickly discovered that only 30 percent of our backups were recoverable. The problem turned out to be a configuration issue on our part, but we were very glad Veeam helped us discover the problem, which we fixed immediately.”
InnerVision’s IT team relies on another key capability in Veeam Backup & Replication: Instant VM Recovery. “Fortunately, we’ve never had to use this in a disaster recovery situation, but we’ve tested it and know it works,” Lance explained.
They’ve also found that Instant VM Recovery is useful in resolving everyday operational issues. For example, they used Instant VM Recovery to retrieve settings from a domain controller and DHCP server that had been upgraded. “I forgot to document the old DHCP settings before upgrading the server. Fortunately, we had backed up the VM before doing the upgrade. I just booted the VM directly from the backup (without connecting it to the network), found the setting I needed and updated it in the production system to fix the problem. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Veeam.”
IT team members also rely on Veeam Backup & Replication to test server updates. “The On-Demand Sandbox capability gives us a safe place to test Windows updates and verify all is well before we deploy anything,” Lance concluded.
SureBackup Recovery Verification helps InnerVision comply with HIPAA regulations
vPower™, the innovative technology behind Veeam Backup & Replication, enables InnerVision’s IT team to automatically verify the recoverability of every backup, of every VM, every time. During recovery verification, vPower creates a VM in an isolated environment and runs it directly from the backup file. It starts the VM, boots the operating system and confirms that everything is running normally. This gives members of the IT team peace of mind and helps them comply with HIPAA regulations.
Instant VM Recovery enables the IT team to restore a VM in minutes
With vPower, Lance and his colleagues can run a VM directly from a compressed and deduplicated backup file on regular backup storage. Therefore, if a VM goes down, they can restart it on any host in minutes.
On-Demand Sandbox provides a virtual lab for testing server updates
InnerVision’s IT team doesn’t need a dedicated test lab to test server updates. Instead, Lance and his colleagues put their backups to work by using Veeam’s virtual lab to test updates and troubleshoot problems.
