The IT team at TK Telekom supports daily business functions and more than 1,000 associates; therefore, the team’s disaster recovery (DR) strategy is the centerpiece of its operation.
According to Łukasz Rakowski, Manager of the IT department at TK Telecom, he and his colleagues virtualized 40% of their IT infrastructure on VMware vSphere as part of an overall effort to improve DR. They oversee approximately 100 Windows and Linux virtual machines (VMs) that run important systems and applications.
“Virtualization is great, but we ran into problems protecting our VMs and their data,” Rakowski said. “VM backups were unreliable and granular recovery was difficult. We also knew it was important to replicate VMs to our other data center, but we didn’t have the means for replication. How could we virtualize more of our infrastructure without reliable VM protection?”
Rakowski and his colleagues contacted Comtegra, a leading systems integrator in Poland, for advice. We find that file-level recovery with Veeam is at least 10 times faster than our previous method.”
Rakowski said VM backups are faster with Veeam too. Lightening-fast incremental backups minimize backup time for the IT team, enabling it to back up more frequently and improve recovery point objectives (RPOs). Backups also require onethird less disk space at TK Telecom because of Veeam’s built-in deduplication. Plus, Veeam works with any storage solution, regardless of the provider, so it integrated well with Data Domain at TK Telecom.
Another key differentiator about Veeam is that it offers VM backup and replication in the same product. Not only can IT administrators back up their VMs, they can also perform image-based replication on-site for high availability or off-site for DR. With Veeam’s near-continuous data protection (CDP), if a VM goes down, administrators can immediately fail over to a replica and then fail back.
“Replication is a really important feature for us,” Rakowski said. “Veeam makes it easy to replicate VMs to our other data center, fail over and fail back, which minimizes the risk of data loss.”
