The key to continuous delivery of top-quality services is a powerful IT infrastructure.
It must be fault-tolerant, flexible, cost effective, and easy to maintain. In mid 2009, UniCredit Bank Ukraine’s executive management made a decision to build a unified, effective, and reliable virtual infrastructure to avoid IT equipment becoming outdated.
The bank’s virtual infrastructure was built on VMware products, and one year later, it included 40 virtual servers. The number of new virtual servers is constantly growing, along with the continuous migration of existing physical servers to the virtual environment. The IT department implemented two 8-way IBM System x3650 servers and connected them to an existing CLARiiON storage system. The servers were then combined into a fault-tolerant DRS cluster managed through a Virtual Center server to provide fail safety for the internal cloud. The internal cloud currently houses SMS banking, web servers, management systems, client insurance systems, employee training systems, an anti-virus system and a programming environment.
The DRS cluster ensures reliable fault tolerance for all mission-critical virtual servers. With the introduction of virtualization, it became impossible to perform centralized monitoring of the whole infrastructure. Before the implementation of the virtual cloud, monitoring was performed through Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007. SCOM agents installed on physical servers were used to transmit performance data to the Management Server. “SCOM provided proactive monitoring and delivered outstanding reports on physical resource utilization and ‘bottlenecks’ in our infrastructure,” explained the Manager of IT Systems Architecture and Administration for UniCredit Bank Ukraine.
Unfortunately, SCOM agents could not provide comprehensive data for virtual servers because SCOM was not designed to support virtual infrastructures. The bank desperately needed a solution to this problem. “We did not want to implement another monitoring system, so the only solution was to make SCOM understand the virtual environment,” he added.
After a thorough market investigation, the IT department of UniCredit Bank Ukraine decided that the best solution would be to implement the Veeam nworks Management Pack (MP) for VMware – a product that enables the IT team to monitor the virtual infrastructure from the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager console.
Instead of agents, Veeam’s solution uses VMware VI API technology to collect performance data. This simplifies implementation and dramatically reduces the risk of system failure. Furthermore, using VMware VI API for data collection produces lower loads on ESX hosts and Virtual Center servers in comparison to agents. The Veeam solution comes with a Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager that contains a set of pre-defined parameters and rules for monitoring the virtual infrastructure. An extensive knowledge base provides descriptions for all parameters in the Management Pack, which is yet another important advantage. In addition, the product is packed with a wide variety of reports. These can be used to perform full-scale analysis of the virtual environment, reduce maintenance costs, find ‘bottlenecks’ and perform proactive monitoring. The Veeam nworks MP is easy to deploy and is ready to use right away.
Full integration with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager
The Veeam nworks MP integrates fully with both VMware and Microsoft System Center. It enables all System Center functionality—including alerts, diagrams, dashboards, reporting, auditing, notifications, responses and automation—for all VMware components, including vCenter, clusters, hosts, virtual machines, storage, and hardware.
