Current backup system doesn’t support legacy systems on virtualized environment

  • Reduces monitoring time by 99 percent
  • Uses 96 percent less disk space for storage
  • Cuts storage costs by $120,000 each year

The Business Challenge

Quebecor World Inc. began the virtualization process when it moved the corporate data center from Chicago to Montreal. Clearly, it was much easier to virtualize the servers rather than ship them to Canada. Virtualization proved beneficial once again when the corporate data center moved back to Chicago a few years later.

Quebecor World’s legacy server system includes Windows NT; however, the corporate standard backup solution didn’t support NT, nor was it an enterprise-level product. For example, it required a cell manager for every 100 machines, and this limited scalability. The backup system was also very restricted in its functionality. For instance, it didn’t offer the ability to pause as needed during the backup process.

Quebecor World needed a reliable VMware recovery solution that offered scalability, efficient storage usage, and ease of use.

The Veeam Solution

Quebecor World chose Veeam Backup & Replication for several reasons. According to Don Walker, one of the company’s Enterprise Windows System Engineers, the solution is easy to set up and maintain, saves on disk space, and cuts storage costs dramatically. “You can set it up and forget about it because it is virtually maintenance free,” he explained. “We used to spend 20 to 30 hours each week monitoring the old backup system, but Veeam Backup & Replication takes less than one hour of our time each month. There’s no comparison between Veeam and the other product when it comes to reliability. It reduced our monitoring time by 99 percent. This is especially important as our virtualized environment continues to grow. We currently have 400 virtual servers.”

Don said Veeam Backup & Replication saves on disk space as well. “Now we use 96 percent less storage space than before,” he explained. “We can keep 50 days of backup on 319 gig of space. The other product only allowed us to keep one day of backup on 148 gig of space. Since all our VMs are built on templates, we’re definitely benefiting from Veeam’s built-in compression, de-duplication technology, and synthetic backup.”

Veeam Backup & Replication also saves Quebecor World a great deal in storage costs, both now and in the future. For example, the company spends more than $100,000 on backup tapes each year. Every time Don and his colleagues transfer tapes offsite (or recall them) they spend $150, whether they move one tape or dozens. “We move tapes two to three times each week,” he said. “That adds up to nearly $120,000 each year in just purchasing and transporting tapes. Our long-term strategy is to increase the amount of disk-to-disk backup on our virtual servers and eliminate these costs.”

The Results

Reduces Monitoring Time by 99 Percent- Before Veeam Backup & Replication was installed, Don and his colleagues spent 20 to 30 hours each week monitoring the old backup system. Now they spend less than one hour each month monitoring Veeam Backup & Replication, which also saves thousands of dollars in employee time.

Uses 96 Percent Less Disk Space for Storage - With Veeam Backup & Replication, Quebecor World keeps 50 days of backup on 319 gig. Before they could only keep one day of backup on 148 gig.

Cuts Storage Costs by $120,000 Each Year - Quebecor World’s long-term strategy is to eliminate approximately $100,000 in yearly backup tape purchases and $20,000 in tape transportation services by increasing the amount of disk-to-disk backup on its virtual servers
