“Making sure our customers receive their orders on time is a top priority for us,” Anders Harder, Team Manager of IT Server Operation at JYSK Nordics. “Our distribution centres must run 24x7 to fulfill customers’ orders and pull stock for our stores. Just one hour of data centre downtime could cost the company a considerable amount of money.
Robotic systems automate fulfillment in the distribution centres. SQL Servers support the robotic systems, so they must be available 24x7. Email is a critical system in the offices; therefore, Exchange must be available 24x7. When slow backup and recovery of these critical systems put the company at risk for downtime, the IT team acted quickly.
Harder said backup was so slow that VMware vSphere and ESXi virtual machines (VMs) could only be backed up once a day, which didn’t provide an adequate number of recovery points to avoid data loss. Recovery was so slow that employees had to wait up to two days for their emails to be restored, which didn’t bode well for timesensitive business communications. Shortening recovery point and time objectives (RTPO™) was IT’s first challenge.
“Another challenge was provisioning for the future,” Harder explained. “Our data grows by nearly 30% each year, and we needed deeper insight into our virtual and backup environments for capacity planning and budgeting. We also needed the ability to detect and resolve issues before they impacted users and the business, but we didn’t have a clear picture of the relationship between our physical and virtual infrastructures. Microsoft System Center Operations Manager monitors our physical infrastructure, so our goal was to obtain a central point of view that included our virtual infrastructure.”

“We back up our file servers throughout the day because employees modify data on the servers quite often,” Harder said. “Having several recovery points decreases our risk of data loss.”
