The Business Challenge
The Information Systems (IS) team at KJWW enables its 450 users worldwide to design, coordinate, communicate, collaborate, and remotely access data efficiently. “Our goal is to provide the peace of mind that all corporate data is safe, secure, always available, and reliably backed up,” explained Don Richhart, Network Administrator for KJWW. “We strive to remain invisible, yet provide the tools needed and offer options to challenges faced daily by our worldwide staff.”
Fifteen of the 35 HP and Dell physical servers are virtualized at the firm’s headquarters. Don said KJWW chose server virtualization for many of the same reasons as other organizations: less hardware to fail, high availability, redundancy, disaster recovery replication, shared storage, faster virtual machine deployments, seamless upgrades and replacements, and cost savings. “We also knew the backup speed would improve and enable amazingly fast restores,” he said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t experience these backup benefits at first.”
Instead, the backup process became the IS team’s biggest struggle. “The product we used first had several reliability issues,” he said. “We had to create multiple custom scripts that required monitoring, and then backups often failed anyway, which required command-line level manual cleanup on the ESX servers—not a fun task.”
The Veeam Solution
Don and his team decided reliability and speed were the two most important features they needed in a backup solution for the VMware environment. “We didn’t want to have to closely monitor backups every night when we could be with family or doing other things,” he said. “And, in the case of recovery, the last thing we needed to worry about was whether or not the backup had run successfully, not to mention whether or not it was corrupt.”
Don and his team replaced the previous product with Veeam Backup & Replication. “It’s working perfectly,” he explained. “Veeam offers the reliability and speed we need. In fact, backups are 93 percent faster than before. Veeam’s use of the VMware vStorage API has significantly improved our time window for backups. Throughput used to be about 3 to 4 MB/s, but now we run at 40 to 60 MB/s on average.”
Don and his team no longer have to monitor the backup process either. “We used to spend up to 10 hours monitoring backups each week,” he explained. “With Veeam, there is no need for excessive monitoring because we know backups will be successful. Reliability is key for us.”
In addition, KJWW is saving approximately 60 percent on required backup storage space. That’s because Veeam Backup & Replication de-duplicates similar blocks inside the backup file. Because this reduces disk space requirements for backups, it results in significant cost savings.
