Challenge

A job fails with the error:

Your Veeam Backup license does not allow processing of free ESXi.

Cause

As detailed in the Platform Support page of the User Guide:

Free ESXi is not supported. Veeam Backup & Replication leverages vSphere and vStorage APIs that VMware disables in free ESXi.

Solution

Install a VMware license that provides vSphere and vStorage APIs.

More Information

If Free ESXi is intentionally being used, consider using Veeam Backup & Replication to back up the Guest OS of the Virtual Machines by treating them as if they are physical machines by using Veeam Agent-based backup. For more information, review: Veeam Agent Management Guide.
