Challenge

This document explains how to recover or migrate Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure data to a new instance.

Solution

Recommended Method — Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure 4.0 and newer

Starting with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure 4.0,  Configuration Backup and Restore is available and is now the simplest way to restore/migrate.

Legacy Methods — Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure 3.0 and older

Before Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure  4.0, which added the feature Configuration Backup and Restore, the methods described below were the only migration methods. The methods below are retained on this KB as legacy methods for migration and are still useful for migrating between editions (for example, from FREE to BYOL).

Below are two Scenarios. Their use will depend on the current state of the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance.

If the current Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance is still operational, follow these steps to recover through the appliance.

The auto-backup feature creates snapshots of the instance that hosts the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure solution based on the user-defined schedule. If the current Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance is still operable, it can be used to restore from the auto-backup snapshot.

To restore the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance:

  1. Go to the Protected Data page and find the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure virtual machine.
  2. Select the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure virtual machine and click Restore > VM Restore on the toolbar.
  3. Navigate through the restore wizard and confirm the operation.
Note that restoring to the original location is not available in this scenario because the original VM must be shut down before switching the disks.

  4. After the restore is complete, shut down the old Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance.
  5. Set up the network settings for the restored virtual machine.
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure does not restore the public IP and DNS names. If you want to use the same IP or domain, both must be configured anew.
  6. Remove the old Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance from Azure.

Note that you may need to reset the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure administrator password.

If the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance is entirely unavailable, a Manual Restore must be performed.
  1. Perform a restore using the PowerShell script below. When the script is run, it will prompt the user for input.

Note: It is highly recommended to use the Azure Cloud Shell to avoid issues with PS modules that may not be installed or  are outdated: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cloud-shell/quickstart-powershell
  1. After the restore is complete, shut down the old Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance.
  2. Tag the restored virtual machine with the same tags as the old Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance.
  3. Set up the network settings for the restored virtual machine.
  4. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure does not restore the public IP and DNS names. If you want to use the same IP or domain, both must be configured anew.
  5. Remove the old Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure instance from Azure.

You may need to reset the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure administrator password.
