Acerca de extri:co a/s:

extri:co a/s is a leading cloud provider and technology reseller that designs, implements and manages IT solutions to help clients achieve new levels of availability so they can focus on growing their businesses. extri:co is a member of the Microsoft SPLA (Service Provider License Agreement) and Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) programs.

Business Opportunity

extri:co was established in Herning, Denmark in 2005 as a reseller and managed service provider for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). A few years later, extri:co began offering virtual machine (VM) backup and recovery services in its hosted cloud to companies of any size.

The majority of extri:co’s customers run their VMs on premises and use Veeam® Backup & Replication™ for local backup and recovery. They also use Veeam to transfer backup copies to extri:co’s hosted cloud. The remaining customers rely on extri:co to manage their VMs in its hosted cloud, and extri:co uses Veeam to back up and recover those VMs.

When more and more companies required 24x7 availability and wanted to keep part of their data center operations on premises, extri:co recognized an opportunity. extri:co could expand the business and grow its customer base by offering hybrid cloud backup and recovery. This was one more way to assure customers they can leave IT to extri:co and focus on growing their companies.

Challenge

To deliver hybrid cloud backup and recovery, extri:co needed a secure, scalable and high-performing public cloud that offered predictable, affordable pricing and reasonable service level agreements (SLAs).

Solution

extri:co has been a Microsoft partner, reseller and customer for years, so the natural next step was to attend Microsoft Ignite and look at Microsoft Azure for infrastructure. Michael Thorstensen, Co-owner and Infrastructure Consultant at extri:co, was impressed by Microsoft Azure’s high performance and fast, scalable, easy-to-deploy services.

“Microsoft Azure is amazing; we knew it would work with our customers’ existing IT assets like no other cloud,” Thorstensen. “Veeam had already made it possible to achieve new levels of availability by extending backup to Microsoft Azure, so we knew we’d be able to simplify hybrid cloud for ourselves and our customers. We have complete trust in both companies.”

Tonny Sewohl, Account Manager at extri:co, said there are several reasons why Veeam and Microsoft Azure are a perfect pairing for customers.

“On the Veeam side, multi-hypervisor support is crucial because our clients run Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere,” Sewohl explained. “End-to-end encryption is crucial too. Our clients know their data is encrypted on site, during transfer and in the cloud. On the Microsoft side, Azure is affordable and scalable. Customers only pay for what they use—we scale up or down to match their demand. Another plus is SLAs. We were so pleased with the SLAs that Microsoft Azure extended to us that we extended them to our customers.”

With Veeam and Microsoft Azure, customers have the assurance that data can be moved quickly and restored just as quickly. What surprised Thorstensen most about Veeam and Microsoft Azure was ease of use.

“We couldn’t believe how simple it was to transfer our first batch of backup copies—16TB of data—with Veeam Cloud Connect to Microsoft Azure,” he explained. “So we tweeted about it, and that tweet was favorited around the world. We also couldn’t believe how easy it is to get data to and from the cloud reliably and economically.”

The 16TB of data transferred to Microsoft Azure with Veeam Cloud Connect included extri:co’s own backup copies. Thorstensen uses Veeam to copy backups securely between his on-premises VMs and Azure-based repositories. He said recovering from backups in Microsoft Azure is just as easy.

“One of our customers in the construction industry accidentally deleted databases from a VM running Microsoft SQL Server and panicked,” he explained. “We used Veeam to restore the whole VM from a backup copy in Azure very quickly and without disrupting business operations.”

extri:co restored the VM for XL Roslev, a building supply company that provides construction materials and equipment to professional craftsmen, contractors and corporations. Prior to outsourcing VM backup and recovery to extri:co, Roslev had suffered data loss using its legacy backup tool.

“We were fortunate we didn’t lose vital files with the legacy backup tool, but we worried what might be lost in the future,” said René Lauersen, Chief Financial Officer at XL Roslev. “If we can’t recover critical data from a backup our company can’t operate, and we’ll lose customers and sales. We cannot risk our reputation or revenue.”

Roslev looked at a number of options to improve availability of data, as well as to gain efficiencies and reduce operational cost. Roslev decided to move in a different direction with its IT department, beginning with outsourcing management of VM backup and recovery and taking advantage of cloud strategies.

Roslev solicited bids from several cloud providers, but only one delivered the availability required to protect Roslev’s business, reputation and customer relationships. extri:co uses Veeam for local backup of Roslev’s 26 on-premises VMs and to copy backups to extri:co’s hosted cloud and Microsoft Azure.

“We chose extri:co because they back up and recover our data locally and in the cloud quickly, giving us the availability we need to protect the business,” Lauersen said. “By partnering with the top leaders in virtualization—Veeam and Microsoft—extri:co made our transition to the cloud fast and easy.”

Thorstensen said Veeam and Microsoft Azure benefit extri:co’s customers and extri:co’s bottom line.

“Not only do Veeam and Microsoft Azure deliver 24x7 availability to customers, they also open up new opportunities and new markets that enable us to grow revenue,” Thorstensen said.

Benefits

Eases customers’ transition to the cloud
“Most of our customers share a commonality,” Sewohl of extri:co said. “Critical data and applications must be available at anytime and from anywhere regardless of circumstance. When we show customers the transparency and reliability with Veeam and Microsoft Azure, they see the benefits of hybrid cloud.”

Hybrid cloud delivers 24x7 availability
“Veeam is the best availability solution out there, and Microsoft Azure is the perfect complement to our hosted cloud—hybrid cloud improves customers’ resiliency,” Thorstensen of extri:co said. “Our goal is to offer our customers the most innovative technologies on the market. Veeam and Microsoft Azure are the future for hybrid cloud.”

Offers complete visibility and control of backups; reduces risk of data loss
Most of extri:co’s customers manage their VMs on premises. They use Veeam to back up their VMs locally for fast recovery and send backup copies to extri:co’s hosted cloud and Microsoft Azure. “Customers like the complete visibility and control they get through the Veeam console plus the secure, offsite repository they get with Microsoft Azure,” Thorstensen said.
