Challenge

Backup Copy job retention processing overlapping with the DD Clean process (garbage collection) may result in data loss.

Cause

Backup Copy job retention processing overlapping with the DD Clean process (garbage collection) may result in data loss due to Data Domain erroneously processing file that is still in use by the Veeam job. Data Domain garbage collection is typically scheduled to run weekly, however the customer may configure it to run more frequently.

Solution

Veeam has produced a hotfix that works around DD OS bug by changing the sequence of file operations in the Backup Copy job.

To obtain the hotfix, please click here (you need to be logged in to download the hotfix).

1. Stop Veeam Backup Service
2. Rename the DLL in C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup to have _old in the name
3. Copy the DLL that was in the .zip file to that location
4. Start Veeam Backup Service

Alternatively, you can disable Virtual Synthetics on the Data Domain system until EMC issues firmware update addressing the issue.

More Information

Please confirm you are running version 9.5.0.823 prior to installing this hotfix. You can check this under Help | About in Veeam Backup & Replication console.
Prior to installing this hot-fix please reboot the Veeam server to clear any locks on the Veeam services and when the reboot is done, please stop all the Veeam services and apply the hot-fix.

After installing the hotfix, start the Veeam services.
