DataLine’s customers are large and medium-sized corporations including some of the top 20 banks in Russia as well as the largest retail companies, e-stores, social networks, media and integrators. All DataLine’s customers require a whole range of services from their service providers regarding data availability. This includes the replication of VMs, data protection against ransomware, instant DR in case of an IT infrastructure failure and the backup of cloud data and Microsoft Office 365 applications.
Since these companies relate to many different business sectors, one of the main tasks for service providers is to offer the best scenario for transferring data to the cloud as well as the most suitable Cloud Data Management solution that’s in accordance with customer-specific business challenges and stringent service level agreements (SLAs).
With Veeam’s help, DataLine was able to help a major enterprise customer to restore its IT infrastructure after a ransomware attack.
“One of our largest enterprise customers, which has more than 70 affiliates all over the country, fell victim to an attack from the Petya ransomware virus,” said Solovyov. “Part of the company’s networks couldn’t function when this occurred. Thanks to the detailed archive of backup copies, the company managed to restore both its servers and its business.”
Another one of DataLine’s customers was able to instantly restore its IT infrastructure with minimal downtime using Veeam Availability Suite after an internal data encryption issue.
“The customer’s virtual infrastructure, particularly its email service, was in the DataLine cloud and the company experienced an internal failure that was linked to its security systems. Their internal encryption came to a standstill. It went out of sync, the data was scrambled on the customer’s side and the entire company’s email service stopped working momentarily,” said the DataLine spokesperson. “We had a Veeam backup, but the size of the VM was rather large. It would have taken several hours, or perhaps even days, to restore it, but using Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery®, we instantly launched the affected VM from the backup without the infection. The customer’s email service resumed, and then using Veeam’s solutions we migrated the VM.”
Apart from data protection solutions, DataLine and Veeam offer companies with Cloud Data Management™ solutions over their environments. DataLine provides cloud services through VMware vCloud Director. Integrating Veeam Cloud Connect with vCloud Director allows customers to manage their backup and recovery policies independently, without having to create and support their own additional facilities.
By using Veeam Cloud Connect, a major retailer and a vehicle manufacturer were able to transfer their data to the DataLine cloud. he transfers deadlines depended on the customers themselves since the main issue wasn’t the speed of migration, but its transparency, simplicity and the ability to implement it without any data loss.
“The retailer needed to be able to quickly access the data on the cloud and by using Veeam Cloud Connect, the customer was able to transfer the backups from their infrastructure independently and launch it on the DataLine cloud,” said the DataLine spokesperson. “Retail is an industry that demands constant access to data and applications and so the whole migration process occurred without any operational downtime for the company.
In another instance, this same company was able to replicate all of its VMs to DataLabs’ cloud with the help of Veeam Availability Suite.
“The vehicle manufacturer also conducted a data migration using Veeam Cloud Connect. The company replicated its VMs onto our cloud and established the connection without any production downtime,” said Solovyov. “This option appeared after the launch of Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4 and the introduction of the possibility of replicating data straight to vCloud Director.”
DataLine and Veeam also educate customers not only on the value of backup solutions as an essential part of modern IT infrastructure, but also on how data availability requires backup copy health checks and DR tests. Problems connected with downtime and data loss can result in irreparable consequences, ranging from damaged reputations and financial losses to the closure of the business.
Cloud technologies are a global trend, and Russia isn’t an exception. Customers are now paying more attention to popular services like Microsoft Cloud Services, so it’s important for DataLine to offer additional services for managing cloud data and backing up Microsoft Office 365 onto the service provider’s platform.
“Occasionally, companies approach us with a request to back up their cloud environment; specifically, their Microsoft estate. We are now beginning to offer precisely that service,” said Solovyov. “As soon as it was revealed, several customers immediately asked about the pilot testing process, as they wanted to ensure that they had copies of their corporate emails.”
Aside from its customer services, DataLine also uses Veeam for its internal requirements and services.
“If we need to back up our VMs, we use Veeam since it is the simplest and the most logical solution,” said Solovyov.
DataLine is an IT-service provider based on its own TIER III data centers. For the past 12 years they have been helping medium-sized and large businesses construct a reliable and scalable ITinfrastructure. Cloud is one of the major developments’ directions. Cloud services take up around 150 racks of equipment, which contain more than 15,000 virtual machines (VMs) that belong to customers. The raw data of the backup copies currently amounts to more than a petabyte, which is more than 3,000 VMs.
DataLine’s customers are large and medium-size corporations as well as companies from financial, industrial, e-commerce and media sectors. For them, having access to their data is not simply a necessity, but it’s crucial to competitiveness. Companies therefore required an effective solution for backing up, protecting and providing a holistic disaster recovery (DR) solution for their data, as well as for managing data in the cloud.
