Veeam Delivers Agentless, Host-Level, Image-Based Protection for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials

On March 9, Veeam Data Platform delivered the general availability of agentless, host-level, image-based backup support for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials Software. This general availability milestone marks an important advancement in Veeam and HPE’s alliance and brings enterprise-grade data protection to organizations who are modernizing their virtualization environments.

As customers evaluate hypervisor alternatives, reduce dependency on legacy hypervisors, and rethink cost structures, one requirement remains constant: Data protection cannot be compromised. With Veeam Data Platform integrated into HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, it doesn’t have to be.

Why This Matters Now

IT teams are navigating virtualization cost increases, accelerating data growth, and expanding ransomware threats and flat operational staffing. At the same time, virtualization strategies must reduce vendor dependency without introducing new operational risk. This means organizations are being asked to modernize infrastructure while maintaining operational stability across critical virtual machine (VM) workloads.

HPE Morpheus VM Essentials provides a streamlined, KVM-based virtualization platform that integrates into HPE Private Cloud solutions or can be deployed standalone. With native host-based protection from Veeam Data Platform, customers gain the enterprise backup and recovery capabilities they expect without having to install agents inside every VM.

This is not a temporary workaround; it is a purpose-built integration aligned to enterprise resilience requirements.

Host-Based Protection for HVM

With the HPE Morpheus plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication version 13.0.1 (or later), customers can perform host-based backups of HVM VMs. Instead of protecting workloads with guest level agents, Veeam integrates directly with the HVM hypervisor and HPE Morpheus VM Essentials control plane to capture image-level backups.  The same HVM workloads are still protected when enterprise customers choose to upgrade to the more fully featured HPE Morpheus Enterprise control plane. Key capabilities include:

  • Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for significantly faster daily incremental backups with reduced read IO on source VMs.
  • Full VM restore directly into HVM, even from backups of workloads on other supported hypervisor types.
  • Cross hypervisor recovery to other supported platforms.
  • Application-aware processing with VSS integration.
  • File-level and application item recovery for Exchange, SQL Server, Active Directory, and Oracle.
  • Snapshot orchestration and consolidation reliability.
  • Flexible transport modes including NBD (Network Block Device) and HotAdd.
  • Datastore support for GFS2, NFS, and integration with the HPE Alletra Storage MP plug in.
  • Backup encryption and guest file indexing.

These capabilities deliver faster backups, simplified recovery workflows, and consistent application protection across HVM environments.

Protection, Portability, and Architecture in One Design

Modern data protection is not only about backup; it’s about mobility and architectural consistency.

With Veeam support for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, organizations retain the flexibility to move workloads across environments without introducing risk. VMware VMs can be restored directly into HVM. HVM workloads can be recovered to other on-premises hypervisors if needed. Disaster recovery (DR) to public cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure remains supported to ensure infrastructure modernization decisions do not create new recovery constraints.

Architecturally, the Veeam plug-in introduces a dedicated HVM worker, integrated Veeam Data Mover services, direct hypervisor interaction, and flexible backup repository targeting. Whether VM Essentials is deployed standalone or within an HPE Private Cloud offering, customers can maintain a consistent protection framework across bare metal and virtual infrastructure.

For organizations expanding into HPE Morpheus Enterprise and HPE Morpheus Kubernetes services, Veeam Kasten can extend protection to cloud native workloads to allow data protection strategy to evolve alongside infrastructure strategy.

Wherever workloads run, HPE Morpheus orchestrates and Veeam protects.

Business Outcomes That Matter

Technical integration is important, but outcomes are what truly matter.

Faster incremental backups reduce backup windows and limit impact on production systems. Application-aware image-level protection ensures that when a VM is restored, the applications within are in a consistent and usable state, which reduces troubleshooting and accelerates service restoration. Cross platform recovery preserves flexibility so that modernization efforts do not introduce new operational dependencies.

From a cyber resilience standpoint, image-based backups combined with encryption, verification, and secure repository options support the 3-2-1-1-0 principle. This means: Three copies of data, two different media types, one off site copy, one immutable copy, and zero backup errors verified through testing. This layered immutability model is foundational to defending against modern ransomware threats.

Modernization should strengthen recoverability, not weaken it.

Strengthening Private Cloud Protection

HPE and Veeam address different challenges within the same modernization journey. HPE delivers through a private cloud infrastructure that includes the new HVM hypervisor.  Veeam Data Platform delivers enterprise-grade data protection across that foundation.

Together, customers can modernize their hypervisor strategy while maintaining proven backup, recovery, and portability standards.

This general availability release establishes a strong foundation for continued integration across the HPE Private Cloud portfolio. Organizations that deploy HPE Morpheus VM Essentials can now move forward confidently knowing their VM environments are protected by Veeam Data Platform from day one.

Modern infrastructure decisions demand modern data protection. With HPE Morpheus VM Essentials and Veeam Data Platform, both move forward together.  This integration establishes the foundation for continued expansion across the HPE Private Cloud portfolio.
