FAQs

Veeam Universal License (VUL) is the most capable and flexible license option available, and is how the Veeam Data Platform is licensed. To see licensing option details, reference the licensing policy above. What follows are our most commonly asked questions.
What is Veeam Universal License (VUL)?
Veeam Universal License (VUL) is Veeam’s portable subscription license used to protect workloads across the Veeam Data Platform. VUL can be assigned to different supported workload types as your environment changes, helping simplify licensing and reduce the need to manage multiple product-specific SKUs.
What are the benefits of VUL?
VUL is designed to simplify licensing and improve flexibility as workloads move across on‑premises, hybrid and cloud environments. Key benefits include portable licensing across supported workloads, simpler ordering/management, subscription-based budgeting, and the ability to scale coverage up or down at renewal.
How is VUL measured, and how does it compare to socket licensing?
VUL is consumed per protected workload, rather than per host CPU socket. One VUL typically covers one workload unit (for example, a VM, physical server, cloud instance, certain applications/databases, endpoints in a defined ratio, or a set amount of unstructured data), depending on the workload type and licensing policy.
What is a workload in VUL, and how many licenses do I need?
In VUL, a “workload” is a unit of protection (such as a VM, physical server, cloud instance, supported application/database, endpoints in a defined ratio, or a defined capacity of unstructured/NAS data). The number of VUL licenses you need depends on what you protect and how many units you’re protecting.
What workloads can VUL be used to protect?
VUL can be used to protect a wide range of workloads licensed through the Veeam Data Platform, including virtual machines, physical servers, cloud workloads, enterprise applications/databases, and NAS/unstructured data (based on the current licensing policy). Refer to the licensing policy on this page for the up-to-date scope.
Which Veeam products are licensed separately from VUL?
Some Veeam offerings use their own licensing models and are not covered by VUL. Examples include Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 (per user), Veeam Backup for Salesforce (per user), Kasten by Veeam (per node), and Veeam Management Pack for Microsoft System Center.
Can I mix VUL and socket licenses in the same environment?
This depends on the products and version in use and how your environment is licensed. Many organizations run environments during transitions (for example, migrating from socket licensing to VUL), but the supported combinations and rules are defined in Veeam’s licensing policy and your contract.
How do I check how many VUL licenses I have and how many I’m using?
You can review available and consumed licenses in the Veeam licensing interface and/or Veeam’s licensing portal (depending on your deployment). This shows current consumption and helps you validate coverage before protecting additional workloads.
What happens if I protect more workloads than I have VUL licenses for?
If consumption exceeds available licenses, your environment may enter a licensing-compliance state and you may need to add licenses or reassign coverage to remain compliant. Refer to the licensing policy and product guidance for the exact behavior and resolution steps.
