Challenge

After upgrading to Windows 11, the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service may fail to start.

The following errors can be found in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Endpoint\Svc.VeeamEndpointBackup.log:

Error Failed to start service.
Error Error occurred during LocalDB instance startup: SQL Server process failed to start.
Error (System.Exception)

Additionally, the following entry is found in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances\VeeamEndPoint\error.log:

Cannot use file 'C:\...\master.mdf' because it was originally formatted with sector size 4096 and is now on a volume with sector size 16384. Move the file to a volume with a sector size that is the same as or smaller than the original sector size.

Cause

The Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service fails to start because the MS SQL LocalDB instance is unable to start, which occurs due to sector size reported by the storage driver. SQL Server is only able to work with 512 or 4096 sector sizes. Any values other than 512 or 4096 are not supported per Microsoft and may cause such failures.

Solution

Errors during installation or starting SQL Server on Windows 11 related to system disk sector size greater than 4 KB are being investigated and addressed by Microsoft in the following article - Troubleshoot errors related to system disk sector size greater than 4 KB.
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 6.0 Released

Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 6.0, released in February of 2023 alongside Veeam Backup & Replication 12, uses SQLite database instead of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB. The new database engine, SQLite, is not affected by the issue documented in this article.

We strongly advise all customers to upgrade to the latest version of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Backup & Replication.
