Challenge

A Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows v6 Backup Job for a machine running Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 fails with the error:

Exception of type 'Veeam.Backup.AgentProvider.AgentClosedException' was thrown.

When this occurs, the following error can be found in the Windows Logs > Application event log:

Solution

Update 2023-03-08: A hotfix is now available to resolve this issue.

For Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows managed by Veeam Backup & Replication Protection Group

Deploy the Hotfix as documented in the Deploying Hotfix on Protected Computers section of the User Guide.

Procedure summary:

  1. Identify which Distribution server is in use by the Protection Group.
  2. Connect to that Distribution server.
  3. Navigate to: "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Veeam Distribution Service\Fixes\vaw"
  4. Create a new folder named "KB.479448"
  5. Unpack the contents of the Hotfix to that folder.
  6. Ensure the option "Auto-update backup agents and plug-ins" is enabled in the Protection Group.
  7. Rescan the Protection Group to deploy the Hotfix.

For Standalone Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Deployments

Download and install the fix directly on the machine where Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is operating in standalone configuration.
