Challenge

The backup of an EC2 instance fails with the following error:

Processing "instance-name" failed: The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. Please see the AWS Marketplace site for more information about supported instance types, regions, and operating systems.

Cause

This issue arises when the AWS Marketplace image publisher restricts the image to be used only with specific EC2 Instance types.

During the backup process, Veeam Backup for AWS deploys Workers to attach the EBS Volume created by the Snapshot and to read the data from the disk. The instance type of those Workers must match those that the image publisher approves.

Solution

You can modify the EC2 Instance Type of Workers used by Veeam Backup for AWS to a type that is supported by the image publisher. For more information, visit: Configuring Veeam Backup for AWS > Managing Worker Instances > Managing Worker Profiles

Please note that this configuration is global. After changing the configuration, all Workers will use this new instance type.
