Article Applicability

This article is specifically regarding RPM-based Linux distros (i.e., Oracle, Fedora, and Tumbleweed) that have dkms 3.1.3 installed:

[root@localhost ~]# rpm -qa | grep dkms
dkms-3.1.3-1.el9.noarch

Challenge

Veeam Agent for Linux backup job fails with the following errors when dkms 3.1.3-1 is installed:

[error] Failed to create volume snapshot 
[error] Failed to take volume snapshot 
[error] Failed to perform backup
[error] Veeam snapshot kernel module not found

Solution

  1. Check the version of Veeam Agent for Linux that is installed using the following command:
    Take note of the build number that is installed, it will be referred to in later steps as v.x.y.zzzz.
veeamconfig -v
  1. Using build number information gathered in step 1, use dkms to build and install the necessary Veeam snapshot module:
    • For Oracle 7 and 8:
sudo dkms build veeamsnap/v.x.y.zzzz && sudo dkms autoinstall
  • For Oracle 9, Fedora, and Tumbleweed:
sudo dkms build blksnap/v.x.y.zzz && sudo dkms autoinstall
