Challenge

When editing the properties of a Hardened Repository that has been upgraded to Veeam Hardened Repository version 13 for Veeam Backup & Replication 13 using the Veeam Infrastructure Appliance ISO, and was originally created using the Veeam Hardened Repository ISO version 2.0 for Veeam Backup & Replication 12, the following error is observed during the Apply step of the repository wizard:

Failed to save Backup Repository: veeam-grp-backup group has no rights on the backup folder

The "Edit Backup Repository" window is open to the "Apply" step. An error message with a red X icon states: "Failed to save Backup Repository: veeam-grp-backup group has no rights on the backup folder." The left menu shows steps including Name, Server, Repository, Mount Servers, Review, Apply, and Summary. The error is listed under the Message column in the log.

Cause

This issue occurs when the original Veeam Hardened Repository ISO in Veeam Backup & Replication 12 was configured to use the root of the repository folder (i.e., /mnt/veeam-repository01/) instead of a subfolder (e.g., /mnt/veeam-repository01/backups/). During the upgrade of the Veeam Hardened Repository ISO Appliance to version 13, the path changes to /var/lib/veeam/. If there is no subfolder, backups are placed directly in the root of that path. While the repository service has permissions to the subfolders of /var/lib/veeam/, it does not have permissions directly to the root of that path.

In the Veeam Backup & Replication interface, the "Backup Infrastructure" section is open with "Backup Repositories" selected. The repository named "VHR" is listed as "Hardened" type, hosted on "VHR," with the path "/mnt/veeam-repository01."

Solution

Open a Root Shell on the Veeam Hardened Repository.
Execute the following command:

chown :veeam-grp-backup /var/lib/veeam
