During File Level Restore, the Windows “blue screen” error occurs on the Veeam Backup Server. You cannot restore any guest OS files and Veeam Backup server crashes.
When restoring files with Windows File Level Restore from a backup or a replica, the Veeam Backup server crashes with the Windows “blue screen” error, subsequently causing an unexpected restart of the system. This can be caused by anti-virus software checking the virtual VMDK (Virtual Disk) file(s) created by Veeam Backup & Replication and utilized during the restore process.
First, isolate the behavior by temporarily disabling anti-virus to confirm this is the root cause of your problem.
If the problem is not reproduced after disabling anti-virus, add "*.vmdk" or directory "VeeamVirt\*.*" (C:\VeeamFLR for 6.x version) into the exclusion list of your anti-virus software.
You will also want to exclude the installation folder, typically "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication" and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Veeam", on your Veeam Backup Server.
The issue was detected specifically with Trend Micro Worry-Free Edition Business Security Standard 7.0. The above solution should work for any anti-virus software.
