SureBackup of VM with NLB fails with "IP addresses were not resolved" or "cannot detect IP address"

Challenge

A SureBackup job processing a VM that is configured to use Microsoft NLB in Unicast mode fails with the error:
Cannot detect IP address. Ping test will be skipped

Solution

Review the NLB configuration with your network administrator team to determine if the NLB Operation Mode can be changed to Multicast mode.

 

If it is not possible to reconfigure the NLB to use Multicast, review the workaround options below.

Workaround

Disable the Ping Test option for the VM(s) have NLB operating in Unicast mode.

(Optional) To add a layer of verification as a substitute for disabling the ping test, you may consider creating a custom SureBackup Role for an ordinarily open port on the VM. This way, even with the ping test disabled, the custom role's script test will still test to see if a port is listening and validate that the machine booted.
