Pervasiveness and Causes of Ransomware in 2022

Veeam recently published the largest independent ransomware research project of its kind, the 2022 Ransomware Trends Report. For the next few weeks, we’ll be unpacking some of the key findings of that research, starting with “How pervasive are these attacks?

To understand the topic better, an independent research firm surveyed 1,000 organizations that had been victims of cyberattacks in 2021. Here is what the research found:

With such proliferation throughout an organization’s infrastructure, the survey also looked at what the entry points for these rampant attacks were:

Ransomware has democratized data theft. Data only needs to have enough value to the victim that they are convinced to pay ransom to recover that data. Because of this, companies can no longer hold on to the belief that they cannot be targeted. Attackers are evolving by targeting repositories as a way to ensure you can’t recover, making it essential that you secure your backup repositories and test your disaster recovery plans to increase your potential to survive.  Veeam believes that secure backup is your last line of defense against ransomware. Having the ability to verify your data is backed up, know it is protected and can recover quickly ensures you minimize downtime and data loss so that you never have to pay a costly ransom.

This is part of a blog series over the next few weeks that will hopefully equip you to have new conversations that are fortified by industry data:

  • Overview of the Ransomware Trends Project
  • The Problem: Pervasiveness & Causes of Ransomware
  • Remediation: Looking Closer at Ransoms, Restorations and Recoverability
  • Lessons Learned and Technologies Moving Forward

We hope the series is helpful. If you have questions related to the research, please reach out to us at StrategicResearch@veeam.com. To learn more about Veeam’s approaches to recovering from ransomware, click here.
