BlueWave Computing

BlueWave Computing, LLC is one of the nation’s largest managed service providers. The company’s cloud computing service is a highly flexible, enterprise-class, multi-tenant system built for high availability. This offering has driven the cloud computing division’s revenue growth by 100 percent and helped propel BlueWave to four consecutive years on Inc. Magazine’s annual list of the fastest growing private companies in the United States.

BlueWave Computing, LLC has a large data center in Atlanta, Georgia, and a failover site in Phoenix, Arizona. The growing IT infrastructure includes hundreds of virtual machines (VMs). The exact number varies each month based on customers’ needs.

When the company’s VM backup solution proved to be inefficient in an expanding virtual environment, Dan Timko, Director of Hosted Services for BlueWave Computing, began looking for another solution. “The previous tool required us to manage the backup agent on every VM, which taxed our operations personnel, especially during peak periods of customer acquisition,” he said. “And, it didn’t offer quick recovery options.”

Timko said he and his colleagues needed an agentless and scalable backup solution to protect a growing number of VMs. “We also wanted flexible licensing options,” he added. “For example, we didn’t want to make a long-term commitment on the number of VMs. Instead, we wanted licensing to align with our business model.”

Veeam Software: Support from Start to Finish

Timko and his colleagues learned about Veeam Backup & Replication™ at VMworld. “It became clear this was the data protection solution we needed for our IT infrastructure,” he said. “It also became clear that Veeam Software would make a good partner because they understand the challenges service providers face.”

Timko said Veeam Backup & Replication was a good match for BlueWave Computing for several reasons. First, it is scalable and reliable. In addition to protecting all VMs in the company’s growing hosted environment, Veeam gives Timko and his colleagues quick recovery options. It lets them recover an entire VM or an individual object from any application or file system quickly — all from the same image-level backup. “It’s very apparent that Veeam was built specifically for VMware,” he explained. “Plus, there are no agents to manage, which saves us valuable time and reduces operational overhead — two very important factors in any business.”

Another way BlueWave Computing reduces operational overhead is through decreased hardware and software licensing costs. “We run a large number of backups with a small number of Veeam backup servers because of Veeam’s built-in deduplication capability,” he said. “This really saves on hardware costs. We also rent licenses from Veeam on a monthly basis, depending on the number of VMs we’re backing up. We didn’t have to make a long-term commitment on the number of VMs, plus the capital expense that goes with it. In fact, we made a profit from day one because we rent as we go.”

BlueWave Computing offers daily full backups to customers, as well as replication. “Veeam Backup & Replication opened up a second revenue stream for us: replication to the Phoenix site,” Timko said. “This service is especially important to customers in healthcare and financial services that must guarantee patient or end user data is secure and readily available at a disaster recovery site. We’ve closed several deals because Veeam helps us meet their regulatory requirements by ensuring secure, reliable data availability and lowering their recovery time and recovery point objectives.”

Offering replication capabilities has become a competitive differentiator for BlueWave Computing, and Timko and his colleagues are considering additional revenue streams with Veeam Backup & Replication. “We’re talking with our Veeam systems engineer about offering a recovery verification service with the SureBackup feature so customers can verify the recoverability of every backup, of every VM, every time,” he said. “Veeam has been a great partner from day one. They give us the tools we need to grow our business quickly and make it even more profitable.”
