Brush School District’s staff and students require constant data Availability to access the internet, run essential educational applications, process and issue staff payroll, record grades and order all school supplies.
Without internet access, students would be unable to do school work that’s reliant on online applications and get to their assignments. Faculty would be unable to access any of their essential work applications like email, as well as documents and files and most importantly get paid.
“If we were to have an outage, it would be a mess,” said Scott Trautwein, director of technology at Brush School District. “Students and teachers wouldn’t be able to access the internet and therefore would be unable to do anything and no one would be able to receive payment. Things would grind to a halt.”
This means that if Brush School District’s data becomes unavailable, teachers are unable to teach, students are unable to effectively learn. Even worse, if the data outage lasts long enough, payroll for the district’s staff would not be able to be accessed. This would greatly damage the district’s reputation and could potentially lead to staffing challenges.
Because of this, Brush School District’s IT team was looking for a solution that would allow them more peace of mind, particularly as they moved to an entirely virtual infrastructure. Brush School District’s old backup solution was slow, unreliable and had incredibly slow backup times — often taking days to come back online and recovering from any potential disasters would take weeks.
“Thankfully we haven’t really had a massive data failure, but it would be disastrous with our old solution,” Trautwein said. “We would have to forgo a lot of security we have in place just to get the internet working as a band-aid solution. On top of that, restoring everything would take a good week or two. We’d lose a good week of time at least to get everything up again.”
The Brush School District replaced their old, complex backup system with a Cloud Data Management solution based around Veeam Backup & Replication.
The district moved to a solution that was not only cost effective but also was dependable to keep key day to day operations systems functioning for students and staff. “Our system moved to an entirely virtual environment, so Veeam was the best fit and reasonably priced,” Trautwein said. “We were looking for something that was easier to use, made for virtual environments and more cost-effective, reliable and Veeam was far and away the best solution.”
Brush School District also needed a solution that ensures payroll data remains available. Making sure that that their IT system is regularly able to process paychecks is a top priority for the district; a paid staff makes for a pleasant work experience while adding credibility to your place of work.
“We have a wonderful faculty, like family, and we want to make sure they are taken care of and always secured compensation for their hard work. Veeam helps make sure of that,” Trautwein said.
The public school district is closely monitored with their funding. The federal government provides only about 8 percent of public school revenues, and the remaining revenue is through taxpayer dollars. “Saving money in our IT space of the school system with Veeam allows tax payer dollars to be saved and allocated to other needed areas.”
Since adopting Veeam, Brush School District has enjoyed the peace of mind that their critical data like internet, grades and staff payroll is protected, always available and can be restored quickly in case anything happens. The school district got a more effective solution for a much better price point by choosing Veeam Backup & Replication to protect their data.
Brush School District is a K-12 school district located in Brush, CO with four schools and a district office. The school district has 1,500 students and 200 employees, all of which require constant data Availability to access the internet and other essential educational applications like Active Directory, email, grading systems and more.
Before adopting Veeam®, Brush School District used Symantec Backup Exec for most of their backup needs. Their old solution was slow, non-intuitive and not all that costeffective. This created challenges with a myriad of things, including processing payroll and day-to-day operations of the school. When the district implemented a project to move to an entirely virtual environment, Veeam was identified as the best and most reasonablypriced solution on the market following an exhaustive search.
