The Business Challenge
Knauf’s Latvian subsidiary was founded in 1994 to serve the Baltic region. Manufacturing takes place 24x7 at the subsidiary; therefore, unplanned downtime in the IT infrastructure is unacceptable.
Knauf invested in virtualisation to minimise the risk of downtime and avoid interruption to manufacturing. Soon after VMware vSphere was implemented, the IT team thought it would be practical to backup its virtual machines (VMs) with the same tool it used to backup its physical machines. However, that tool didn’t integrate well with vSphere; it was slow and cumbersome. The team also hoped to use a native tool for monitoring the virtual environment, but it didn’t offer deep reporting capabilities.
Knauf had several requirements for data protection and virtualisation management: high-speed backup, built-in deduplication, fast VM restore and comprehensive monitoring and reporting.
“Our goal was to meet service level agreements (SLAs) and improve long-term analysis of the virtual environment,” said Jelena Obolevica, Head of IT department of Knauf Baltics. “We needed a stable, mature solution to help us reach our goal, and we also wanted something that was easy to use.”
The IT team contacted OptiCom, a leading networking company in Latvia, for advice.
“Like most of our clients, Knauf was looking for ways to protect data and minimize risk in the virtual environment,” said Aleksey Zasyadko, Manager of Sales at OptiCom. “The IT team was also looking for all-inclusive virtualisation management to plan for virtual growth. Veeam has a single, integrated solution that answers both issues.”
The Veeam Solution
Veeam® Backup Management Suite is a powerful, easy-to-use solution for VMware and Hyper-V environments of all sizes. It combines Veeam Backup & Replication™ for fast, flexible and reliable recovery of VMs and Veeam ONE™ for real-time monitoring and alerting, documentation and management reporting.
With Veeam, backup speed is 30 times faster than before, enabling Knauf’s IT team to backup seven times more frequently. Because Veeam has built-in deduplication, five times less storage is needed for backups. But what really matters to team members is meeting recovery time objectives (RTOs) in SLAs. With Veeam, they can recover a VM in minutes. It took them four hours to recover a VM with the previous process.
“If you want to guarantee SLAs, Veeam is for you,” Obolevica said. “Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery lets us recover a VM from a backup in a few clicks. Instant File-Level Recovery is great too—we can recover a file or application item in minutes.”
In addition to VM protection, Veeam provides Knauf with virtualisation management to ensure performance and availability of the vSphere environment. Veeam takes the guesswork out of planning for growth with trend analysis, threshold forecasts, provisioning recommendations and what-if modeling.
“Now we can predict future requirements based on analysis of long-term historical data,” Obolevica said. “It’s important to optimize resource configuration and usage, and Veeam helps us track performance and changes.”
Veeam provides 24x7 monitoring and alerting as well as built-in intelligence for fast troubleshooting and problem resolution. Monitoring dashboards offer intuitive single-click access to object details, performance data and knowledge-base articles, putting all the information administrators need within easy reach. Organisations can also categorise and group clusters, hosts, VMs and datastores by criteria such as business unit, department, purpose and SLA, enabling users to view and manage their virtual infrastructures based on their organisation’s needs and priorities.
“Veeam provides the deep monitoring and reporting we need for long-term analysis so we can plan accordingly,” Obolevica said. “Monitoring and reporting combined with Instant VM Recovery has helped us meet our goal.”
Backup is fast, easy and storage-efficient
Veeam Backup Management Suite is an easy-to-use solution that was designed specifically for virtualisation. It provides Knauf’s IT team with fast, frequent VM backups that require less storage than before, thanks to built-in deduplication and forever incremental backups.
RTOs and SLAs are met with less effort
Instant VM Recovery lets team members restart a failed VM quickly from a compressed and deduplicated backup file on regular backup storage, enabling them to meet RTOs in SLAs. Before Veeam, recovering a VM took several hours.
24x7 monitoring and deep reporting help optimise virtual environment
Veeam provides complete monitoring, performance analysis, alerting and reporting capabilities that help team members enhance the performance, configuration and utilisation of their virtual infrastructure.
