Fotona’s decades-long experience in the laser industry began 50 years ago in 1964, producing frontline laser devices for defense, optical communications, industrial, dental and medical applications throughout this time. Fotona today is a world-leading medical laser company recognized for its innovative, award-winning laser systems for applications in aesthetics & dermatology, dentistry, surgery and gynecology. Based in the US and EU, with corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas and Ljubljana, Slovenia, Fotona’s business philosophy is to continuously choose perfection to meet the needs of a highly demanding marketplace.

Fotona’s global distribution network spans across more than 60 countries. They need to deliver and ensure comprehensive support and service for Fotona laser users, including clinical training, workshops and practical hands-on demonstrations. Backup, replication and recovery of their business systems and applications were unreliable and slow, placing availability at risk.

The Business Challenge

Approximately all of the infrastructure is virtualized and includes VMware ESXi hosts. Virtual machines are Windows and Linux servers, running Microsoft and various automated applications. Fotona had one legacy backup solution which had limited capabilities in a virtual environment and was not reliable. 30 VMs were back up traditionally with agents installed and with manual scripts just like physical servers.

“We need to deliver 24.7.365 availability of our critical business systems, applications and data for our partners and laser users for training, workshops and presentations. To provide 24.7 technical support, technicians require always-on access to virtualized applications and data. Without that, technicians can’t serve customers the way Fotona intends—and the way customers appreciate and expect. We need faster and easier way to recover virtualized data and applications in the event of problems occur.”

The legacy backup tool was unreliable and Fotona didn’t have full confidence in its ability to deliver 24.7.365 availability of their critical business systems. After virtualization, legacy tool did not deliver fast, reliable and secure protection of our virtualized environment where we run our ERP system which is one of several virtualized Tier I systems that play a key role in Fotona business.

“We realized that we needed a solution that was specifically designed for a virtual environment so that we could quickly recover a VM, application or data. We also have a lot of problems with backing up our data and we got tired of wasting our time trying to figure out why our backups failed so frequently. We were told ‘Sometimes backups work and sometimes they don’t.’ That’s a ridiculous statement in today’s virtualized world”, said Marko Žužek.

Veeam partner ADD d.o.o suggested that we try Veeam Backup & Replication solution, because it is easy to use, meet challenges with data growth, leverages server virtualization, modern storage, deliver fast, flexible and reliable recovery of virtualized applications and data, unifying backup and replication – all in a single solution.

The Veeam Solution

Fotona company chose solution designed specific for virtualize environments. Fotona deployed Veeam Backup & Replication solution to protect and manage VMware vSphere VMs to ensure 24.7.365 access to every business function.

Veeam Backup & Replication proved its value at Fotona when the IT team restored a test VM in minutes from a regular backup, reducing recovery time by 95%.

“We were looking for a solution that would automatically backup up all VMs in our environment, would provide one-step backup, fast and reliable restore and meet data growth”, said Marko Žužek.

“We tried Veeam Backup & Replication solution and we were impressed by the simplicity and ease-of-use. It delivered everything we needed”, said Marko Žužek.

Veeam Backup & Replication provides Fotona with several recovery capabilities, such as Instant VM Recovery®, which restarts a failed VM from a regular backup in minutes, and Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft Exchange and SQL which provides instant visibility into Exchange and SQL backups and fast recovery of individual items such as emails and databases.

Veeam solution also provides SureBackup functionality which help us guarantee the recoverability of every backup restore point, every time. We are 100% confident that we can recover entire VMs, files and individual application items quickly. Our most common recoveries are ERP and File system.

“Veeam saves us a significant amount of time, making us more efficient, explained Marko Žužek. Instead of our IT administrators spending couple of hours restoring VMs and several hours each week worrying about backups completing successfully, they use that time to focus on IT initiatives that will improve business processes”.

The Results

  • Recovery of VMs running ERP and Oracle takes minutes
“If we can’t recover ERP and Oracle quickly, our processing facilities default to manual processing, and we run the risk of not meeting customers’ supply chain demands,” Miller added. “Between Instant VM Recovery and five weeks of reliable restore points for critical VMs, we know we can recover anything with Veeam quickly.”
