Best virtualization for disaster recovery project and Best of Show

Veeam customer Midverk won “Best virtualization for disaster recovery project” as well as overall “Best of Show” at VMworld Europe 2013.

The award judges said that “Veeam’s user interface was so straightforward that Midverk didn’t have to read the user guide, which saved precious time during the crisis.”

The legacy backup appliance was too complicated to use, especially during a crisis that left software development data unprotected.

The Business Challenge

It was a typical Friday evening at Midverk ehf when the IT team left the office to go home. The 70 virtual machines (VMs) that run 90% of applications in the IT infrastructure were fully operational. However, disaster struck shortly after 3:00 a.m. on Saturday when the datacenter lost electrical power and the battery-powered supply unit failed. The team hurried back to the office.

When electricity was restored several hours later, the team discovered a problem with one of its storage-area networks (SANs). The storage array that held the company’s most recent and important software development data was corrupt. Jon Helgason, IT Manager for Midverk, called Nyherji, one of Iceland’s leading IT service providers and Midverk’s long-term business partner.

“Nyherji managed to get the faulty array online, but we had no redundancy and no backup of the development data,” Helgason explained. “I didn’t want to use our legacy backup appliance because the latest version was too complicated. I had heard good things about Veeam® Backup & Replication so I downloaded the software and got a trial key. Three hours later I had everything in our VMware vSphere environment backed up and running. Veeam was a lifesaver!”

The Veeam Solution

One day after the power outage, Midverk purchased Veeam Backup Essentials—a powerful, easy-to-use and affordable solution for data protection and virtualization management in VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments. Veeam Backup Essentials packages Veeam Backup & Replication for fast, flexible and reliable backup and recovery of VMs and Veeam ONE for real-time monitoring and alerting, capacity planning, documentation and management reporting. Veeam Backup Essentials can be purchased in two-socket bundles for environments with two, four or six sockets.

“I was already familiar with Veeam Backup & Replication because it had saved the day during our crisis, but I had no idea how amazing Veeam ONE can be,” Helgason said. “First, it was easy to install and use. Then it instantly began giving us more insight into our backup environment and virtual environment than we had ever had before. For example, I immediately began getting emails about VMs with too many snapshots and CPU usage.” Veeam ONE provides complete visibility of Midverk’s backup and virtual infrastructures and delivers the capabilities that matter most to the IT team. With advanced monitoring, reporting and capacity planning, team members ensure the performance and availability of the entire virtual infrastructure.

“It’s astounding to see what Veeam ONE is collecting, such as array usage and VMs that are getting low on space,” Helgason said. “It helps us understand the growth and overall health of our system.”

Right after Midverk purchased Veeam Backup Essentials, Helgason installed Veeam Backup & Replication again—this time at another location because he wanted to guarantee business continuity with a second set of VM backups. Hyper-V is the default hypervisor at the other location, but that wasn’t an issue because Veeam supports a mixed hypervisor environment.

“It’s great that Veeam supports vSphere and Hyper-V,” Helgason said. “I’ve heard peers complain about using different backup appliances with different hypervisors and also about long VM backup and recovery times, but that doesn’t happen with Veeam. Backups with Veeam are so fast that we’re able to backup our software development VMs every four hours rather than once a day like we did before Veeam. More frequent backups reduce the chance of us losing code.”

Helgason said VM recovery with Veeam is fast too. Veeam’s vPower® technology enables Instant VM Recovery, which lets Midverk’s IT team restart a failed VM from a regular backup in minutes. Granular recovery is also fast and easy with Veeam because the team can recover a file from any guest operating or file system directly from a backup. “One more great thing about Veeam is decreased backup storage,” Helgason added. “Veeam has built-in deduplication and compression, so our backup storage is four times smaller now.”
