Veeam® Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux — key components of the Veeam Availability Platform™ — are small backup agents designed to provide comprehensive backup and recovery for physical and cloud-based workloads running on servers, workstations, desktops, laptops and more. They are managed through a single console.
While Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux (all versions) are managed centrally with Veeam Backup & Replication™, they can be deployed as standalone products as well.
Yes, with the Free Editions of Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows and Linux, you can back up to a Veeam repository backed by a licensed Veeam Backup & Replication server. However, you cannot have both free and paid editions of Veeam Agents backing up to a Veeam repository at the same time — you must choose to use either all free or all paid agents.
All versions of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows can be deployed in server mode to enable server-specific features (e.g., application-aware processing, file indexing and search, server-friendly scheduling and retention, etc.), making it the best choice for server backups for many enterprise applications.

New Instance licenses can be used for standalone Veeam Agent deployments and when agents are managed by the Veeam Backup & Replication server. Licenses must be purchased in quantities of at least ten instances.
This is detailed in our licensing policy.
Both of these products are available using Subscription licensing with either the Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Availability Suite™ license SKU. There is no longer a license SKU just for Veeam Agents.
With the release of version 3 and the related release of Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4, Veeam adopted a new licensing model called Veeam Instance licensing which applies to most Veeam products, including Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE™, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux, Veeam Backup & Replication for AWS and more.
Effective at contract renewal or at the upgrade to v3, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux will use Veeam Instance licensing. Learn more about Veeam Instance licensing here.
General Veeam licensing information, including licensing criteria and terminology, can be viewed here.
This process will be handled in the user portal under My Account. Customers will be notified in My Account that they have 90 days to update. This includes customers who have some Perpetual licenses and some agent Server / Workstation licenses.
Click on the Get New Licenses button in My Account. Select the products you want to upgrade, click download and you’re done.
Legacy Veeam Agent licenses are edition-agnostic. To transition to Veeam Instance licensing, existing Veeam Agent licenses are converted into Enterprise Plus license editions by default. Refer to the licensing policy or Veeam Pricing Calculator to understand conversion ratios. There is no additional cost for this conversion.
Customers may choose to combine their Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup Essentials™ and new Veeam Agent licenses into a single license. In this case, the edition of the combined license will be taken from the corresponding Veeam Backup & Replication license, and Instance licenses counts are recalculated. You can preview this calculation on the Customer Portal’s Merge Licenses screen. This single license will be set to expire according to the earliest expiring maintenance contract, however, the customer can always undo the license merge to get back standalone licenses with actual maintenance expiration dates.
Veeam has changed how we sell Subscription licenses and have moved to selling a pool of portable licenses instead of only selling product-specific licenses. The minimum increment of VIL orders is 10 instances. Fortunately, these Instance licenses can be used across multiple products, including Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE, Veeam Backup & Replication for AWS and more.
As you may be aware, we have had a minimum purchase for agent workstations for some time.
If you only need to protect agents, the most cost-effective option would be to purchase VIL Standard edition. At three instances per server, one bundle of 10 instances would protect three servers, leaving one instance for whatever you choose.
If you have other Veeam products in your environment and you want to centrally manage the environment, we ask that you maintain the same edition across the various products.
