Challenge

This situation is related to Surebackup environments. Due to some changes made in the way Active Directory Integrated Zones start up in Server 2008, DNS servers sometimes will not load the forward lookup zone until after performing an initial replication with its partners.

Cause

The Surebackup Domain Controller can't communicate with the replication partners before loading the zone.

Solution

There is a Microsoft registry key that should be modified only on the Virtual Machines inside the SureBackup job due to the nature of the key.

Open Regedit
Browse to the following extension: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters
Add the following dword (32 bit) value: Repl Perform Initial Synchronizations
And leave this set to 0.

*A reboot may be required to load the key properly.
