No network data available for ESX(i) hosts

Challenge

SCOM shows the following alert: 
 
VP510 No metrics obtained for ESX hosts, failed to process performance or configuration data for host(s)
 
Under SCOM Monitoring -> Veeam for Vmware-> vSphere Host-> Performance views, performance counters for hosts actually exist and show all data except for the Network counters. 
 
The vmspi.log contains the following entries:
 
[VP320] gatherHostNetStats failed[J], Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
VP510, VP510 No metrics obtained for ESX hosts, failed to process performance or configuration data for host(s) 

Cause

If the affected host has only vSphere Distributed Switches and does not have a vSphere Standard Switch, Veeam MP will be unable to process this configuration correctly.

Solution

Workaround available:

In the vSphere client open Configuration tab for the affected host, choose Networking and add a vSphere Standard Switch.

Fix available:

To resolve the issue without using the workaround above, apply the patch for Veeam MP available though this KB article.
 

More information

The issue is to be addressed in future updates of Veeam MP.
