IBM Domino (formerly IBM Lotus Domino) is a non-VSS application. It is a server platform for social business collaboration and includes a variety of applications for everyday business needs. Unlike traditional file servers, a Lotus Domino database is accessed continuously and requires a specific backup approach.

Veeam® Backup & Replication™ features application-aware image processing, Veeam’s proprietary technology for creating consistent VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service)-aware application backups. VSS helps to momentarily freeze an application and take a VM snapshot for further processing. This guarantees that backed up VMs and applications can be reliably recovered. On the other hand, backing up non-VSS-aware applications can be more of a challenge. Without VSS support, virtualized applications will not automatically ensure data integrity or successful future restores.
