Want to Simplify Backup? Choose Veeam

Commvault may protect a wide range of workloads and offer a broad set of features, but at the cost of a complexity that makes you highly dependent on highly skilled Backup Administrators and consultants.

Detect Threats Sooner and More Reliably

Stay ahead of threats with proactive and broad detection, third-party integrations, and in-house incident response. Clean recovery is standard across all license tiers, unlike Commvault’s limited and costly approach.

Recover Wherever and However You Need

Restore data anywhere — across clouds, hypervisors, or physical systems — without relying on catalogs or databases. Veeam eliminates single points of failure, unlike Commvault’s limited and less portable recovery.

Minimize Downtime and Ensure Compliance

Minimize downtime with one-click orchestration, automated threat scans, recovery validation, and compliance reporting. Unlike Commvault’s manual, complex processes, Veeam delivers fast, reliable, and audit-ready restores.

Shrink Costs and Accelerate ROI

Achieve rapid ROI with quick deployment, intuitive management, and flexible scaling. Veeam delivers enterprise-grade protection without Commvault’s hidden complexity costs and requirements for professional services.

No Admin Dependency: More Autonomy and Less Silos

Make your data protection strategy resilient with Veeam. Anyone can handle backup and recovery when your backup administrator is absent. Plus, onboarding new admins takes a fraction of the time Commvault requires.

Why Choose Veeam Over Commvault

Feature Veeam Benefits Commvault Limitations
Data Security
Threat detection before and during backups

Spot threats sooner with Veeam’s in-line backup scanning, which uses AI-driven entropy analysis, IoC detection, and signature analysis. Plus, Recon Scanner provides proactive alerts on suspicious events in the backup server.

Commvault only detects anomalies in backups after they are finished, and AI-based scans can only be run ad-hoc (i.e. no scheduling or automation). Early detection mechanisms rely on a honeypot approach that wastes resources and is not proven.

Threat detection during recovery

Ensure clean data restores with built-in signature-based malware detection, leveraging Veeam’s Threat Hunter or third-party engines, plus a YARA engine for tracking specific patterns—all integrated in the restore flow.

Commvault cannot scan for malware during recovery. Before restoring, you must first complete a scan job and confirm that infected data was quarantined. Detection is limited to the built-in engine, and advanced scanning methods like YARA are not supported.

Clean room recovery

Achieve clean room recovery to an isolated site or public cloud with automated malware scanning and end-to-end orchestration. Test recoverability, conduct forensics, and validate recovery plans without disruptions.

With Commvault, setting up the clean room environment, conducting tests, and migrating data back to production are manual processes. In addition, it is licensed and billed as a costly add-on, and you must also pay for the storage and cloud infrastructure.

Cyber incident response services

Get help recovering from cyber incidents with Veeam's broad set of in-house incident response services. These services combine patent-pending threat assessment technology, pre-incident educational sessions, and recovery services.

Commvault relies on external incident response partners like CrowdStrike and Deloitte, leading to delayed response times, fragmented communication, and limited in-house expertise. This reactive approach means businesses face longer downtime and higher risks.

Data Portability
Cross-platform recovery and migration

With cross-platform recovery and migration for the broadest set of platforms—seven hypervisors and three public cloud providers—data can be recovered even if the original hypervisor or cloud is unavailable.

Commvault’s options for restoring or migrating workloads across different hypervisors or clouds are limited, increasing downtime during migrations or modernizations.

Portable backup file format

Enjoy true data mobility and no single points of failure with self-contained backup files, which are independent of backup catalogs or databases, so you can restore anywhere, even if your backup server is lost.

Commvault’s platform lacks a portable data format and ties backups to its deduplication database and catalog. If these components fail or are compromised, recovering your data becomes a complex, multi-stage process and may even be impossible.

Instant recovery anywhere

Instantly recover any workload—VMs, physical servers, or cloud instances—to any dominating hypervisors, without rehydrating or waiting for lengthy conversions, so you minimize downtime and accelerate migrations.

With Commvault, instant recovery is only available for limited scenarios, such as VMware or Hyper-V, on the same platform. Cross-platform instant recovery is not supported, so you face longer restore times and more manual work when moving between environments.

Data Recovery
Recoverability verification

Ensure that recoveries will succeed with robust recoverability tests, including application tests, and recovery plan verifications for backup, storage snapshots, and periodic or continuous VM replication.

Commvault’s recovery verification is available only for VMware backups and snapshots and is limited to basic boot tests and running scripts within the virtual machines, with default scripts being provided only for MS SQL and Oracle databases.

Recovery orchestration

Validate the infrastructure, connectivity, and dependencies to create accessible and recoverable backup data and a reliable, orchestrated recovery process without disrupting the critical workloads that drive your business.

Recovery orchestration in Commvault relies heavily on custom workflows that require scripting expertise or professional services. As it does not offer advanced orchestration plans like Veeam, this can delay critical recovery operations.

Automated documentation

Effortlessly provide compliance reports to executives and board members with automated, detailed documentation of every step in your recovery plan, testing, validation, and processes.

Commvault does not provide such detailed recovery orchestration reports or automated documentation.
