Overview

Sovereignty you can actually prove

Sovereignty rules are easy to promise and hard to prove, and the burden falls on you. Veeam Data Platform enforces residency, keeping backup data inside defined boundaries with auditable compliance evidence.

Deploy on your own infrastructure, work with a Veeam Sovereign VCSP, or blend both under one policy framework.

Documentation

Data Sovereignty Capabilities

Sovereignty built in, not bolted on

Veeam Data Platform builds policy enforcement, jurisdictional boundaries, and compliance visibility into the core, so data stays where it needs to be.

Policy-enforced data residency

Define where data lives, how long it is retained, and how it can be recovered within jurisdictional boundaries. Enforcement is platform-driven, not dependent on manual checks or individual admins.

Sovereignty visibility and reporting

Location-aware reporting on data residency by region, policy compliance, and sovereignty violations across your environment. Audit-ready when you
need it.

Sovereign in-region VCSP partners

Sovereign in-region VCSP partners deliver data protection as a service that keeps data within required borders, across a growing range of regulated regions.

Hybrid flexibility

Mix self-managed and partner-managed protection under one policy framework, with the same compliance evidence regardless of deployment path. Local control where you need it, partner-delivered where you don't.

Software-defined, no hardware lock-in

Deploy as a virtual or physical appliance on the infrastructure you already own. No proprietary hardware. No vendor-mandated architecture. Bring your own hardware, any environment.

Air-gapped and dark site support

Operates in disconnected and air-gapped environments with no live cloud dependency. A local mirror repository handles updates on-site. Sovereign compliance holds without sacrificing continuity.

FAQ

What does data sovereignty mean with Veeam?
Data sovereignty means keeping control of your data: where it lives, who can access it, and which laws and contracts govern it. Veeam supports the full picture through placement controls, access governance, immutable copies, and the choice to run it yourself or with a sovereignty-focused partner.
Is data sovereignty the same as data residency?
No. Residency is where data physically sits. Sovereignty is broader: who can access your data, whether you can keep using it during disruption, and which country's laws and provider contracts apply. Veeam helps with residency and sovereignty, from region-specific placement to access controls and portable, provable recovery.
How do I keep backup data in a specific country or region?
Use location tags and placement policies to define where data is stored, copied, and recovered, and send immutable copies to Veeam Data Cloud Vault in the region you choose. Veeam ONE reports residency by region and flags violations. If residency is the main need, this covers it, while stricter sovereignty adds a specialized partner.
Can a sovereignty-focused partner handle this for me?
Yes, and for strict requirements it is often the best path. A Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) partner that specializes in sovereignty runs protection in-region, keeps data under local jurisdiction and staff, and owns meeting your requirements instead of building it yourself. Run it yourself, use a partner, or blend both.
Do I need a dedicated sovereign cloud to meet requirements?
Not always. For many organizations, placement controls, region-locked immutable copies, and portable backups meet residency and control needs. Where jurisdiction rules are strict, a sovereign cloud or sovereignty-focused VCSP partner adds legal and operational separation. Veeam supports both under one policy framework.
Does Veeam help with GDPR, NIS2, and similar regulations?
Yes. Veeam helps you meet residency and control obligations under regulations such as GDPR and NIS2: keep backups in approved locations, lock immutable copies to a chosen region, govern access with SSO, MFA, and role-based control, and produce audit-ready evidence of where data lives and who can reach it.
Who can access my data, and can I keep providers out?
You stay in control. Role-based access, SSO, and MFA enforce least-privilege access and record who approved recovery actions. Backups are encrypted and you control the keys, so only you can access the data. Immutable backups ensure the data cannot be changed. With your own infrastructure or a sovereignty-focused partner you decide which operators and jurisdictions can reach the data, limiting third-party access.
Can Veeam protect data in air-gapped or dark-site environments?
Yes. Veeam runs in disconnected, air-gapped, and dark-site environments with no live cloud dependency. A local mirror repository handles updates on-site, so requirements hold even with no internet access. This is the operational layer of sovereignty: keeping data usable under isolation or disruption.
How can I see and prove where my backup data resides?
Veeam ONE includes Data Sovereignty Overview and Data Sovereignty Violations reports that map where backups, copies, and replicas reside by region and highlight mismatches or untagged data. Exportable, audit-ready output gives you and auditors clear proof that data stayed within approved boundaries.
