Veeam Backup & Replication provides support for NFS 4.1 on Azure Files. Veeam Backup & Replication uses Azure’s storage account credentials to access Azure file shares to retrieve the contents using Veeam’s Enhanced NAS backup technology.

All standard requirements for the connections and ports apply, for more details please refer to the Used Ports section of the User Guide for Veeam Backup & Replication.

NFS 4.1 support for Azure Files requires specific networking and security requirements to be adhered to during the implementation of the environment and making it accessible. For more details, please refer to the solution requirements in the Azure NFS documentation.

The recommended implementation is to leverage Azure Private Endpoint for the off-site backups stored in another region.

On-premises environments should consider the placement of the primary repository in Azure or validate the transport network to and from the Azure file share and on-premises environment meets the objectives for backup and restore of that particular environment.

Veeam Backup & Replication supports backing up and restoring Azure NFS 4.1 file shares by default: the IT personnel responsible for the data protection of this entity can configure backup jobs and plan restore activities using the standard toolset and UI functions for NAS backups. For more details, please refer to the NAS backup section of the User Guide.

Use cases

  • Back up Azure NFS 4.1 file shares
  • Store off-site backups for Azure NFS 4.1 file shares in a different region or/and using a different type of media (e.g. Azure Blob)
  • Migrate from on-premises environments to Azure or form a hybrid cloud solution with protected workloads residing in Azure and on-premises
