Veeam Software, innovative provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, congratulates its customers SEGA Europe Ltd. and Midverk ehf for being named winners of the Best of VMworld Europe 2013 User Awards.

“We are very proud that SEGA Europe and Midverk both use Veeam Backup & Replication to help ensure their virtualized IT environments are protected,” said Ratmir Timashev, Veeam President and CEO. “Veeam’s technology supports the agility and responsiveness of their IT operations teams, aiming to improve their overall IT management capabilities. These two companies are among the best in their respective industries and the Best of VMworld Europe awards are a great testament to their success.”

SEGA Europe: winner of best virtualization and server consolidation project

Located in Middlesex, England, SEGA Europe Ltd. is an interactive entertainment company. The company develops and distributes software for a variety of platforms. During a server consolidation project, Sega's VMware vSphere environment grew, so backing up virtual machines became a laborious and time-intensive project. They spent too many hours scheduling backups because all VMs couldn’t complete within the backup window, as well as time troubleshooting corrupted backups. The legacy backup tool didn’t have the features they needed to back up 400+ VMs.

SEGA needed fast, reliable backup so they could stop babysitting backup jobs and start focusing on new system designs. They also wanted peace of mind knowing their backups could be easily recovered. Consulting partner System Professional recommended Veeam Backup & Replication.

“With Veeam, backup speed and reliability have improved immensely, saving us countless hours because no one has to watch over backups anymore, “said Francis Hart, Live Operations Manager for SEGA Europe. “Backup used to be a project in itself, but Veeam turned it into a really easy, automated process that instills confidence in our team. Backups complete within the backup window and are automatically verified for recoverability, giving us peace of mind and more time to focus on datacenter priorities. We also save a lot of money in backup storage because of Veeam’s built-in deduplication, which is phenomenal.”

In regards to SEGA, the VMworld Europe 2013 judges added, “A really great story of a company that is obviously passionately innovative about its environment, taking action to save countless hours and put them back into making the business more productive.”

Midverk: winner of both best virtualization for disaster recovery project and the Best of Show award

Established in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1986, Midverk ehf is a software development and IT management company serving Iceland’s financial, retail and manufacturing industries. Midverk’s IT team left the office one Friday evening with the 70 virtual machines which run 90% of applications in its IT infrastructure fully operational. There was a party going on in another part of the building, but that wasn’t unusual.

At 5 A.M. on Saturday morning, the team received a call informing them that the electricity had failed in the datacenter and had been down for about 2 hours.

When the team arrived, they saw that someone attending the party had used a restroom on the same floor and ripped out the light, which short-circuited the entire floor. When the electricity came on, the uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) were down. One of the storage area network (SAN) arrays that held important software development data was misbehaving and in an extremely fragile state. Midverk’s IT service provider managed to get the faulty array online, but they had no redundancy and no recent backup of the development data, which contained four years of code and was worth approximately $500,000. They needed a backup of that critical data immediately because the electricity was still very unstable and with no backup in place, they could lose everything at any moment.

Not wanting to use a legacy backup solution in such a time-sensitive and critical situation, Midverk decided to download a trial key of Veeam software. They were able to to begin the backup process quickly, and finish in a record time. After the backup was done, the SAN was still rebuilding, which took an additional 30 hours to complete. Midverk would be in danger of losing data during that time period but by using Veeam, the data was safe.

“The learning curve with Veeam was really fast, “said Jon Helgason, IT Manager for Midverk. “The user interface is so straightforward that I didn’t have to read the user guide, which saved time during the crisis. I installed it quickly, and three hours later I had everything in our VMware vSphere environment backed up and running. Veeam was a lifesaver!”

Midverk is now using Veeam Backup & Replication v7.0 to support their multi-hypervisor environment which includes VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. “By getting our virtual environment up and running within three hours, we saved the company,” continued Helgason. “Veeam is fast, reliable and easy to use.”
